history

John Nepomuk Chapel on Vrchhora Mountain

Today's municipality Veľký Klíž was established in 1964 through the merger of the places Ješkova Ves (independent again since 1990), Klíž (Hungarian Apátkolos - until 1907 Kolos ) and Klížske Hradište (until 1927 Slovak "Klíž Hradište"; Hungarian Nagykolos - until 1900 ) Koloshradistye .

Klíž was first mentioned in writing as a clus in 1244 and developed from a Benedictine monastery founded around 1070 during the reign of Ladislaus I , which was later upgraded to an abbey. This had market rights and was the seat of a manor. In 1541 robber baron Rafael Podmaniczky conquered the abbey and had it expanded into a fortified complex; In 1553 the village had three portals . After his death in 1558, the entire complex was razed in 1562 and the abbey was not re-established. In 1828 there were 62 houses and 434 inhabitants.

Klížske Hradište was first mentioned in writing in 1293 as a Haradic and belonged to the aforementioned Klíž estate. In 1553 the village had a total of five and a half porta, in 1828 there were 56 houses and 388 inhabitants.

Until 1918, both places in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
