Andy Barber works as the Assistant District Attorney in Newton, Massachusetts. His wife Laurie runs a children's home and they both have a fourteen-year-old son, Jacob. One day Andy is called to a murder case. The dead man found in a public park is Ben Rifkin, a classmate of Jacobs. Andy brings the news of their son's death to Ben's parents. Andy Barber is transferring the case despite concerns from his superiors as Andy knew the family and the victim. Together with Detective Paula Duffy, he begins an investigation and questions Ben's classmates, but receives no useful statements. The first suspicion falls on the convicted sex offender Leonard Patz, who lives not far from the park. Andy is made aware of allegations circulating on the Internet via an anonymous message: Classmate Derek accuses Jacob of having killed Ben because he has a knife. Andy searches Jacob's room and finds a jackknife.

Jacob is confronted with the find of the knife by his parents and denies the act; A short time later Andy secretly throws the knife away in the trash. When Jacob's fingerprint is found on Ben's clothes, Andy is stripped from the case. Andy competitor Neal, to whom Andy was once a mentor, takes over the lead of the investigation against his son. Leonard Patz is not considered suspect after an initial interrogation, he says, although he was in the park that morning, he did not know the victim. The Barbers' house is searched and Jacob arrested. Leonard Patz in turn erases numerous photos of Ben on his cell phone in an unnoticed moment.

Andy Barber has his son defended by Joanna Klein, who is an expert in her field. After an initial hearing, Jacob is released from prison on bail. The news that he is the suspect gets around quickly. Friends turn away from the family, the house is smeared, and Laurie is on leave, with a layoff pending. Andy confesses a family secret to Laurie: his father never left the family, but has been in jail for years for the rape and murder of a girl. In order to forestall the charges, Jacob is given a break by biological psychiatrist Dr. Bird examines. This is primarily intended to invalidate the possible argument of an inherited “murderous gene”. Meanwhile, Ben's classmate Sarah reports to Detective Duffy, who is still working on the case, who has information about Ben's killer.

Andy secretly received the Leonard Patz file from Detective Duffy. He visits his last victim, Matt, who reported Leonard for sexual harassment. However, Matt refuses to cooperate. Jacob receives a visit from Sarah, who suggests that Derek may be involved in the murder. A little later, Jacob gets a new Instagram account against the instructions of his parents . Meanwhile, Laurie is increasingly suffering from social isolation. She lies to Andy that she goes out to dinner with a friend, instead observes her former colleagues and then goes to a fast food restaurant, where she pours out her heart towards a complete stranger. The woman turns out to be a journalist who wants to publish an article about the family. Laurie is horrified, but hides the meeting from Andy. Dr. Vogel explains to Andy that, in addition to his own DNA sample, he also needs one from his father, who insists on meeting Andy. Although he hasn't seen his father since childhood, Andy agrees.

The graduation ceremony of the school year takes place in Jacobs School, at which Ben is also remembered. Andy visits his father in prison, but his father breaks off the conversation after a short time. In his private life, there is a crisis when the journalist's article appears and describes Andy above all as a loner. A little later, Laurie meets Ben's mother in the supermarket, who spits on her. Laurie turns to Dr. Bird for assistance. Laurie was particularly disturbed by one scene: at the age of five, Jacob tried to hit a child of the same age with whom he had an argument on the head with a bowling ball from behind; only Laurie's intervention prevented this. Andy seeks out Detective Duffy, who confirms that they interrogated Derek again after a tip, but they do not suspect him. Andy seeks out Derek, who accuses him of not knowing Jacob's dark side. Among other things, he has a preference for cutter depictions that show injuries and is active in a forum called the Cut-Up-Room. Andy keeps the information to himself. He speaks to Sarah, who admits that she gave him the tip with the allegations against Jacob on the Internet and that she also made Detective Duffy aware of Derek. Ben had blackmailed her with a sent nude picture of her. Derek, who is in love with Sarah, then stole his cell phone and wanted to give it to Sarah, but she did not accept it. Derek got angry; a few days later, Ben was dead. Andy and Jacob spend a father-son day fishing. At the end of the day, they learn that Ben's cell phone is in the possession of the prosecution. Andy's father also consented to a DNA check. Andy realizes that Laurie was in jail with him and persuaded him. At night, Andy receives multiple calls to an unknown number - it's Matt, but he keeps hanging up without saying anything.

Joanna Klein and Andy are allowed to examine the cell phone as evidence. On site they meet Neal, who provokes Andy by pointing out his father. Andy gets violent; In addition, they now know that the prosecution knows about Andy's father as a murderer. A little later it became known nationwide through the press. The evaluation of the cell phone does not provide any new information. Joanna points out to Andy that she found out about Jacob's new Instagram profile. Jacob posted here, among other things, a montage of himself with an ax and the saying "What people think of me". At the urging of his parents, Jacob deletes his profile. Matt admits to Joanna, Andy and Neal that he allowed Leonard to touch him immorally for money. When Leonard refused to pay for this act, Matt reported him. At that time, however, Leonard had already had a new “goal” with the later opera Ben. A house search at Leonard Patz's house does not provide any new information and does not lead to the start of the process being postponed. Shortly before the trial begins, Laurie is followed while jogging by a car that Andy had noticed near the house some time before. In addition, Dr. Vogel told the parents and Joanna Klein shared the findings from the sessions with Jacob. Although he does not have the killer gene, he does have genes that stand for impulsiveness, recklessness and violent behavior. Above all, the reduced ability to empathize , also demonstrable as a gene in Jacob, finds Dr. Bird worrying. All genes are also detectable in Andy and his father, both also have the "killer gene". Laurie doubts Jacob's innocence while Andy defends him. In front of Jacob, who has his birthday that day, they try not to show anything. In the evening Andy confronts the man who had previously followed Laurie in the car. He doesn't know him. The next day the barbers drive to court where the trial begins.

The prosecution and defense advance their view of the case, with Neal making numerous mistakes. Although the judge has forbidden a mention of Andy's father in the run-up to the trial, Neal brings this fact up during the trial, so that he is warned by the judge and the process is close to being abandoned. Andy learns that the unknown man who followed Laurie is believed to be a criminal and a thug who can be hired for money. Shortly after Joanna tells Andy that Matt, who is scheduled to witness the next day, is likely to go into hiding, the prosecution calls Derek to the stand. He reports that Jacob was massively bullied by Ben, that Jacob made malicious statements after Ben's death and that three days after the body was found, he published a story in the cut-up room in which the murder of Ben is discussed in detail. Joanna, Andy and Laurie are horrified, but Jacob later asserts in front of his parents that it was just a story and that he did not kill Ben. In fact, the story only contains facts that were already known through the press. Laurie now thinks her son is the culprit, while Andy remains convinced of his innocence. The couple ended the evening in an argument. Meanwhile, Leonard Patz writes on the back of his summons to testify the following day, crying, his confession that he killed Ben.

The following day the trial against Jacob is closed: Leonard Patz has hanged himself in his apartment and left a written confession. When the Barbers are attacked by Ben's father as they leave the court, the stranger who once pursued Laurie intervenes. He imagines Andy as a friend of his father's, who guarded the barbers on his father's behalf. He would do anything for Andy's father. While Laurie blames herself for suspecting her son, Andy doubts. He looks for his father in prison and realizes that his acquaintance went to Leonard Patz on his behalf, forced him to write down a confession and then strangled him. Andy keeps the knowledge to himself. The family is spending a Christmas vacation in Mexico. During the New Year's Eve party, young Hope, with whom Jacob became friends and with whom he had argued at the party, disappears. Jacob is suspected and interrogated. Andy reports to Laurie about Leonard Patz's murder that night. Laurie is horrified that Jacob is now another possible perpetrator. The next morning Hope is found alive - another party guest had taken her to his home.
The Barbers return home, sell their house shortly afterwards, and plan to move to another state. Laurie, however, falls apart because of the events, especially since she sees how much Ben's parents suffer from the loss of their son. When she is on the way to the hairdresser with Jacob, she confesses to her son that she does not believe his protests of innocence. She drives faster and faster in the rain and finally drives the car to a tunnel wall. Laurie and Jacob are taken to the intensive care unit, Jacob is in a coma, while Laurie can no longer remember the accident. A preliminary hearing, which Neal conducts, should clarify whether Laurie is charged with attempting to kill Jacob or whether it was an accident. Andy asserts that it was an accident, even if he found an album with photos of Jacobs children in the trash during Laurie's trip to the hairdresser and knows the truth. It is decided to classify the incident as an accident. Laurie, on the other hand, wishes the three of them just became a happy family again.
