content

The Dalton brothers Joe, William, Jack and Averell Dalton want revenge on Lucky Luke for killing their criminal cousins . However, they are very clumsy at first, so that neither the revenge on Lucky Luke nor raids on a stagecoach or a farm is crowned with success. However, through hard training, the brothers manage to improve their skills. They want to take on Lucky Luke again. Using a trick, however, he can turn the brothers against each other and hide himself with the city's gravedigger. As a result, the Daltons besieged the city from all four directions and no longer let food in. Lucky Luke has to surrender and wins a fist fight against the Daltons, who compete one behind the other, but feels compelled to join the Daltons to appear. This allows him to prevent a train robbery and multiple bank robberies. When the Daltons want to share the "booty", Lucky Luke moves away, so that they realize too late that it is only made of paper. Lucky Luke prepared the potential victims for the attack by an "acting troupe" beforehand. Thereupon they want to get revenge on Lucky Luke and divide into four different cities in order to face Lucky Luke.

First, Averell meets Lucky Luke, who however manages to outsmart him with a trick. He can catch William because Averell always recognizes and betrays him in his disguise; When William tries to surprise Lucky Luke in a woman's costume, he can no longer find his weapon, so Lucky Luke can catch him too. Jack is caught after having a shootout with Lucky Luke and they agree to play Russian roulette towards the end . Lucky Luke removes the bullets and scares Jack with a shouted "Bang!" Finally he can also disarm Joe and hand the four Daltons over to the sheriff .

Remarks

The style of drawing still differs from the later volumes.

The Daltons look exactly like their cousins and only differ from one another in size. At the beginning the names are in ascending order of size Joe, William, Jack, Averell; however, at the end of the tape William and Jack are swapped. Already in this first volume the peculiarities of the Daltons are visible, Joe is the boss and Averell is rather stupid and tends to eat. William and Jack have relatively significant roles over other volumes. Their cousins are killed by Lucky Luke in volume 81 The Outlaws ; these Dalton brothers are historically documented.

The new Dalton brothers appear briefly in Lucky Luke against Joss Jamon , but William is addressed with the short form Bill.
