Victor Bauffe
Victor Bauffe (born February 26, 1849 in Bergen , Belgium , † October 12, 1921 in The Hague ) was a Belgian landscape painter and watercolorist from the Hague School .
life and work
Victor Bauffe was born on February 26, 1849 in Bergen ( Mons ), later he moved to The Hague and studied there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts . There he became an apprentice of Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch , who became his friend and shaped him strongly. Together they went to polders a lot to see the most beautiful places in the area. He often painted near Renkum , Voorschoten and Kortenhoef where many other painters of the 19th century, the landscape studied. In Kortenhoef (which was declared the 'Painter's Village of the Netherlands' in 2004), the 'Het Rechthuis', opposite the church, was the meeting point for the artists . Bauffe stayed there very often, painting the inside of the house. In 1900 he made a trip to the French Impressionists of the famous Barbizon School . There he was able to further improve his painting style and capture new motifs . Bauffe died on October 12, 1921 at the age of 75 in The Hague.
Bauffe painted in the style of Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and the Hague School . The oil paintings and watercolors by Bauffe and Weissenbruch were often only distinguishable by their signature . He mostly painted landscapes (often by the water), interior scenes, but also still lifes . Typical was his focus on perspective and the use of bright colors. Many shades of gray and blue reflect the mood of the moment in his works . He shows himself very strongly in the air parts of his works of art , many of his paintings have a somewhat depressing atmosphere with approaching rain clouds and storms . His landscapes by the water are very similar to those of Fredericus Jacobus van Rossum du Chattel , who studied at the Hague Academy at around the same time as he.
Works by Victor Bauffe were traded at well-known auction houses such as Christie's , Sotheby's and Dorotheum .
