Vilpian ( Italian : Vilpiano ) is a village in South Tyrol ( Italy ). This is located on the orographic left , eastern side of the Adige Valley , halfway between Bozen and Meran , at the foot of the Tschögglberg , 264 m above sea level. Today Vilpian is a fraction of the municipality of Terlan and has around 800 inhabitants.

The symbols of the village are the two adjacent parish churches dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker .

history

In earlier times the entire Adige Valley was swampy and largely floodplain . In the course of time, the Möltner Bach had washed ashore an alluvial cone of sand and rubble, whereupon the Vilpian settlement emerged. The place name has changed several times. Ersturkundlich it is 1164 as "Vvlpiam" and in 1288 in the Urbar of the Tyrolean sovereign Meinhard II. As "Vuelpian" called. In 1313 one wrote "Fulpian" , later "Fülpian" , from 1564 mostly "Vilpian" . Etymologically , it is a late antique praedien name , derived from * Vulpius and the suffix -anu ('Gut des Vulpius').

From the 13th century, Vilpian counted Terlan, Nals and Andrian as part of the prince's land registry and judicial district of Neuhaus . The immediate proximity of the village to the Adige (before its regulation and straightening from 1869) led to the construction of bridges that were attested as early as the 14th century. A deed of sale from 1362 expressly mentions “in pertinenciis Welpiani ex opposito pontis qui dicitur Stainpruke et inter pontem qui dicitur Sachpruke on the Sant” (in the area of Vilpian opposite the stone bridge and this side of the material bridge on the sand), that is the two bridges "Steinbrücke" and "Sachbrücke".

Mining has flourished in the neighboring villages of Terlan and Nals since the 14th century . Even in Vilpian, near the Knappenloch on the Ganderberg, people dug - albeit unsuccessfully - for silver .

In 1897 the Schwarz brothers from Bozen established the former Vilpianer Brewery , which in the early 20th century advanced to become one of the most important beer producers in South Tyrol.

Church history

Today there are two Joseph's churches in Vilpian. The older, smaller church was built in 1639. Until 1743 Vilpian belonged to the parish of Tesimo . In the same year the cemetery was built around the church. Since then, baptismal and confirmation books, marriage registers and the death register have been kept in Vilpian. In 1865 the church received a bell tower. It has served as a funeral chapel since the new church was built and is still the starting point for funeral parades to the cemetery. The old Josefskirche is generally not accessible.

The foundation stone for the new Josefs Church was laid in 1949, the shell was in place in 1950 and it was inaugurated in 1955. The large crucifix on the high altar from the 17th century is on loan from the Merano City Museum . Two praying angels are depicted on the outside of the west facade. The frescoes were created by the Austrian painter, graphic artist, draftsman and resident of Merano, Franz Lenhart .

The South Tyrolean fire brigade school is located in Vilpian. The practice and training area of the regional association of volunteer fire brigades in South Tyrol extends on the eastern edge of the village at the beginning of the mountain slope from the height of the center towards the north towards the campsite. This is where the school-based and practical training of fire fighters takes place on a voluntary or operational basis in various fire service and fire protection courses. On the approximately 400 by 200 meter large area, there are various training buildings as well as a helicopter landing pad and various extinguishing objects such as a fuel transporter or a fire training building with metal walls.
