Volker Steiner

Volker Steiner (born June 22, 1940 in Karlsruhe ) is a German manager. He was division manager and spokesman for the management of Deutsche Telekom AG in Bonn and a member of the board of Eutelsat SA . in Paris .

Life

Steiner was born in Karlsruhe in 1940 as the son of Frieda Magdalena Heck and Egon Ferdinand Steiner. He grew up in Helmsheim and attended the Justus-Knecht-Gymnasium in Bruchsal . He studied communications engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), today's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). After his studies and a short-term activity as an assistant at the University of Karlsruhe, he joined in 1968 as a mail clerk to clear up the preparatory service for the higher telecommunications technical service at the main post office in Stuttgart in the service of the German Post Office .

In 1969 he became a consultant and then head of department at the Central Telecommunications Office in Darmstadt . During this employment, he went to Paris in 1971 as a lecturer at the École Nationale d'Administration (ENA) and the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (ENST) .

From 1969 to 1973 he worked as the national reporter for the Federal Republic of Germany in the study commissions for standard frequency and time signals and radio frequency monitoring of the Comité Consultatif International des Radiocommunications (CCIR) in Geneva . In this role he was part of the advisory committee of the International Telecommunication Union (UIT), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN).

From 1973 to 1976 Steiner worked as a specialist advisor to UIT in development projects in numerous African countries. From 1969 to 1976 he enjoyed diplomatic status .

In 1977 he was transferred to the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications, where he was employed as a consultant for national and international satellite matters. In 1983 he was appointed head of the “National Satellite Systems” project group ( DFS-Kopernikus and TV-SAT ) and, in this role, played a key role in founding the international satellite organizations Eutelsat and Inmarsat . From 1986 he was appointed head of the department for research and system planning as well as the ministry's research officer.

From 1990 to 1999 he headed the group business area broadcasting, audiovisual and security at Deutsche Telekom, which from 1993 included the areas of multimedia and end devices for business customers and from 1996 also the broadband cable area .

As chairman of the preparatory committee of the European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications (EURESCOM), he was primarily responsible for the establishment of the institute in March 1991 in Heidelberg .

On January 1, 1999, Steiner was appointed to the board of Eutelsat in Paris as Director Commercial Affairs and Multimedia. In April 2000, the board of Deutsche Telekom brought him back to Bonn as spokesman for the broadcasting management. At the same time, Steiner was active as spokesman for the "Initiative Marketing Digital Radio" (IMDR) for the distribution of digital radio ( DAB ) in Germany. In 2001 he moved back to the board of directors of Eutelsat as Director Commercial Affairs and Multimedia, where he helped shape the privatization process of Eutelsat from an intergovernmental organization to a listed company. In 2004, Eutelsat Services und Beteiligungs-GmbH was founded under his leadership. In this role, he made a significant contribution to Eutelsat's European expansion course and to the expansion of broadband in Germany. As managing director and founding member of the Eutelsat Services und Beteiligungen-GmbH holding company, he was also responsible for the 100% subsidiaries KabelKiosk GmbH and visAvision GmbH. In 2011, visAvision GmbH operated the KabelKiosk, the leading digital platform for supplying German and European cable network operators with over 120 free and pay TV programs. Most recently, as Managing Director, he was responsible for the satellite operator's business in Germany.

Steiner was retired from operational business on February 21, 2012.

Awards

Due to his seven-year service for the Deutsche Bundespost in the International Telecommunication Union (UIT), the representation of the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany within the UIT, his role as a specialist advisor to the UIT in development projects in Africa and his function as chairman of the EURESCOM preparatory committee, he was welcomed on 21 September 1992 awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker .

Honorary positions

In 2008 Steiner was elected to the presbytery of the Evangelical Church in Bonn-Holzlar and was involved in this office until 2016. He takes part in community life as an active member.

Supervisory board mandates

From 2000 to 2001, Steiner was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Broadcasting Division of Deutsche Telekom AG.

Steiner has lived in Bonn with his wife Margarete Steiner (née Götz) since 1982. They have a daughter and a son.
