The Art of Getting By (Original title: The Art of Getting By ) is an American romantic comedy by Gavin Wiesen from 2011 on.

action

George lives with his mother and stepfather in New York and believes that homework and exertion at school are unnecessary pastimes, since humans are mortal anyway and therefore the knowledge gained in school can only be used for a limited time. Therefore, he has developed into an expert in cheating his way through school without any effort. He meets Sally when he spots her smoking on the school roof. When a teacher comes, he distracts her so that Sally is not noticed. Sally thanks him later and the two get closer.

The two skip a day of school together and explore the city. You watch George's stepfather walking haphazardly through town. When George looks in his stepfather's office, he learns that the company no longer exists.

On “Career Day”, where former students get in touch with current students from Morgan High School, George gets to know the artist Dustin. George is immediately taken with him and the way he thinks about life. George takes Sally to Dustin's Brooklyn studio.

At Sally's request, George goes to a New Year's party. At the party, Sally dances with her ex-boyfriend, whereupon George gets drunk. Sally finds him lying in a side street, takes him home with her and apologizes to him.

On Valentine's Day, Sally and George go out to eat together. During dinner, Sally asks if he would like to have sex with her. Obviously shocked, George doesn't answer this question. George is confused and wants to keep his distance from Sally first. In the following time George does not answer Sallys calls and ignores them completely. Out of defiance, she flirts with Dustin, who initially blocks, but then agrees.

George repeatedly refuses to do his English work, whereupon he is taken to the school principal. The latter gives him the choice: Either he will be expelled from school or he will do all of the homework of the previous year in 3 weeks. When George arrives home, an argument escalates in which George confronts his stepfather and a fight ensues. George flees to Sally and wants to confess his love to her. When he kisses her, she opens the door to the living room where Dustin is sitting. George leaves the house injured.

The next morning he meets his mother in the park. She tells him that his stepfather lied to her and that they want to break up. George comforts his mother and begins to rethink his life. In order to guarantee a secure future for himself and his mother, he decides to do everything possible to get his degree. At school he receives all the tasks he has not done and in art class he is given the task of painting a painting on a subject that he has not yet been able to pronounce.

When Sally and George meet in a bar, Sally tells of her plan to travel Europe with Dustin. George admits that he loves her, after all they kiss. Sally says she loves him as well and that she hopes to be with him one day.

George manages to complete all tasks in the allotted time and is even praised by his art teacher for his painting. He also passes the final exam.

At the end, George stands in the art room and looks at his painting: Sally's smile. Sally, who was already at the airport with Dustin, suddenly enters. In the end, they both seem to be together now - but it remains open whether Sally will have to follow her mother and her new husband to Texas.

criticism

“A pseudo-intellectual teen film that allows a lot of time to develop a triviality instead of delving into the injuries of the two children of divorce. Clever and deliberate, he lets his young actors recite their Weltschmerz as protagonists of a supposed bohemian, whereby their common story quickly loses credibility. "

“Fortunately, debut director Gavin Wiesen takes his characters seriously and shot a sensitively told youth story between tragedy and comedy with atmospheric images from New York. Thanks to good actors, the whole thing also seems believable. "
