Vrbovec is a city in northern Croatia that belongs to the Zagreb County . It is located 32 km northeast of Zagreb on the A4 motorway in the direction of Varaždin . According to the 2011 census, there are 14,797 inhabitants (97.66% Croatians ) in the administrative area of the city of Vrbovec and 4,947 people in the city itself.

The mayor who has been in office since 2005 is Vladimir Bregović , who is the successor to Zlatko Herček (2001-2005). history
Vrbovec is mentioned for the first time on April 21, 1244 in church documents. The documents of the series "Privilegialia" are in the episcopal archive in Zagreb . In the 15th century, Vrbovec is mentioned as a trading center where markets regularly took place. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the feudal lord of Vrbovec was the Zrinski family, who protected the area from the Turkish invasion. During this time, Petar Zrinski was born, who later became a Croatian ban .
On September 10, 1976, two planes collided over the city, this plane accident is the largest in Croatian history to this day.
Culture
Since 1980 the small cultural festival " Kaj su jeli naši stari? " Has been held in Vrbovec every last weekend in August (from Friday to Sunday). According to the name of the festival (in German roughly: What did our ancestors eat?), Traditional food is cooked here according to old recipes, exhibited and offered for tasting and sold. There will also be a competition to see which exhibitor could prepare the best traditional food. In 2009 the event was opened by the current Prime Minister of Croatia Jadranka Kosor .
The town festival takes place every year on June 15, which is held in honor of the patron saint of St. Veit.

economy
The most important economic sectors in Vrbovec are the meat processing industry, bakery products and metal processing and manufacturing. The most important employer in the city and the surrounding area is the butcher " PIK Vrbovec ", which has been part of the Agrokor group since 2005 .
