Under the name Waagner-Biro, there are two Austrian steel construction companies based in the Saturn Tower in Vienna , Waagner-Biro Austria Stage Systems GmbH and Waagner Biro Steel and Glass GmbH (as of January 2020).

Rudolph Philip Waagner (1827–1888) founded his company in 1854 as a small trading house in Vienna. The company was in 1854 through the merger of fitters Rudolph Philipp Waagner and Anton Biró († 1882) and in 1904 with Albert Milde & Co. founded.

Initially, the Rudolph Philip Waagner company had a small foundry in Weidling and acquired a good reputation for producing high-quality steel. In 1880 Gustav Ritter von Leon bought the company and added it to his bridge building business. In 1899 another bridge-building company and forge in Graz was also bought. In 1900 Waagner-Biró built the new Talfer Bridge in Bozen . In 1905 the Rudolf Philip Waagner company merged with the well-known company L. and J. Biró & A. Kurz in Hirschstetten to form the R. Ph. Waagner - L. and J. Biró & A. Kurz company . The company has had its current name since 1924.

The company Rudolph Philipp Waagner manufactured the Bulgarian Orthodox "Iron Church" Saint Stephen for Istanbul from 1893 to 1896 , which was completed in 1898. Under the direction of director Günter and Paul Neumann, who later became a professor in Brno , thousands of parts were cast, forged and rolled in the company. The “Iron Church” was then trial assembled in the company's courtyard in the Meidling district of Vienna. This major project caught the attention of the Viennese and articles about it appeared in several Viennese newspapers. A group of members of the Engineering and Architecture Association viewed the work and praised the skillful execution. Archduke Karl Ludwig also visited the trial-assembled church with his two daughters on October 2, 1895 for a whole hour and said he was “extremely praiseworthy”. In 1906 the Vienna State Opera was equipped with the stage technology from Waagner-Biro. On July 12, 1914, the Anton Freiherr von Klesheim-Warte on Pfaffstättner Kogel, a 9-meter-high iron structure as a lookout point, was completed. In the interwar period, numerous steel bridges in Vienna such as the Schwedenbrücke , Floridsdorfer Brücke , Friedensbrücke or Augartenbrücke were built by Waagner Biró. After the Second World War , the roof structure of the bombed State Opera and St. Stephen's Cathedral was rebuilt. The reconstruction and reconstruction of the destroyed Burgtheater was largely carried out by the company, and the new stage was completed in 1954. A hall of the former Waagner-Biró (boiler construction division) in Graz was converted into the Helmut List hall for theater and concerts in 2002/2003 . In 2012 the last other halls of the Waagner-Biró in Graz, all northwest of the main train station, were demolished.

In October 2018 bankruptcy proceedings were opened against the steel construction subsidiary SBE Alpha AG. On October 31, 2018, the group management announced a reorganization procedure without self-administration . The creditors were offered a quota of 20 percent. Erhard Grossnigg is to take over and continue the company, subject to the approval of the trustee. On November 9, 2018, it became known that Waagner-Biro-Bridge-Construction is insolvent. This company was to be continued through a short-term sale.
