The Wachtelberg is an elevation in the Erzgebirge foreland near Freital in Saxony . The summit of the mountain is protected as a natural monument “Quartz porphyry outcrop on the Wachtelberg”.
Location and surroundings
The Wachtelberg rises three kilometers south of the center of Freital. The Freital district of Niederhäslich extends north in the Poisenbach valley, and the Rabenau district of Obernaundorf extends to the south in Eckersdorfer Grund . To the east the elevation merges into the Stieglitzberg and the Poisenwald area , to the northwest into the Raschelberg , to the northwest borders the pan , to the west the plateau of the mountain drops steeply towards the Weißeritz . The rocky mountain flank there is known as the "Schweinsdorf Alps".
geology
On the plateau of the mountain, the so-called Wachtelberg porphyry tuff is exposed, which here superimposes the older rocks of the Rotliegend as an overflow. This rock, known today as ignimbrite , has an average thickness of 12 meters and can be traced back to the ash ejected from a volcano in the Tharandt forest . There are also occurrences of the Wachtelberg-Porphyrtuff at Horkenberg in Neubannewitz and in Rippien . Red clay, which is a weathering product, occurs in the lying area of the porphyry tufa.
The base of the mountain, however, consists of gneiss - conglomerates from the Permian of Döhlener basin . In particular, on the northwest flank there are limestone seams that are on the surface near Schweinsdorf ("Schweinsdorf layers").
