Wakrat is an American punk band from Los Angeles , California that formed in 2015.

history

Mathias Wakrat and bassist Tim Commerford met in 2006 through Zack de la Rocha , from which a friendship developed between the two. Years later, Wakrat revealed that he played drums and would like to start a band with a friend. That friend was named Laurent Grangeon. As a trio they started rehearsing together. Since these rehearsals were successful, they decided to perform together. The first gig was held in September 2015 in the Viper Room . The trio was supported by Chris Cornell , Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha. After the performance it was decided to officially found Wakrat. A music video was then released for the song Knucklehead . This was followed by further concerts with Royal Blood , Bad Religion and the Deftones , before they went on a US tour with Prophets of Rage in August 2016 . The self-titled debut album was released two months later. In 2017 the performance at Hellfest had to be canceled, instead Black Star Riders could be seen.

style

laut.de found that the group's debut albumcontained“dirty punk rock ”, which was inspired by groups like Fugazi or Bad Brains . Tim Commerfordstatedin an interview with Laura Niebling from Rock Hard that heseesthe band's music as a mixture of punk rock, jazz , electronic music and rock music . He cited the bands Black Flag , Bad Brains, Helmet , the Sex Pistols and Minutemen as influences, although he did not feel that there are sonic parallels between these groups and Wakrat. For the album, Wakrat and Grangeon first wrote the arrangements for the electric guitar and drums before Commerford played the bass. In the same issue, Holger Stratmann reviewed the debut album and found that "the anarchic attitude, the irrepressible energy, the rhythmic level and the interspersed licks and the sound effects of guitarist Laurent Grangeon" forced a comparison to Rage Against the Machine . Especially the bass and Commerford's vocals would dominate the songs. He summarized the music as "high energy alternative punk rock", with most of the songs not exceeding the three-minute mark. The sound is a bit reminiscent of the early The Police , but the songwriting doesn't come closeto that of this group or Rage Against the Machine. Moritz Eisner from the Ox-Fanzine noticed a “ groovy , deep, driving and by no means smoothly ironed sound” and occasional sonic parallels to Rage Against the Machine. The singing brings back memories of the grunge of the 1990s, but is faster. In the songs, the bass is very much in the foreground.
