Waldbrand EP is the first extended play by German singer-songwriter Madeline Juno .

Creation and artwork

The development of forest fires was supported by Initiative Musik . All pieces on the album were written and composed jointly by Madeline Juno and the German music producer Oliver Som . Already on their predecessor Salvation , the two wrote the three pieces Quicksand , Restless and Youth together. Som was also responsible for the mixing, recording and production of the album. Juno was at his side as a co-producer (“Additional Producer”). The Waldbrand EP was released under the Embassy of Music label and distributed by BMG Rights Management and Emmaspark Music / Sony ATV .

On the cover of the album you can see - in addition to artist name and album title - Juno's upper body, outdoors at night. She wears a jeans jacket rolled up at her arms and holds a burning lighter in front of her face with her right hand. The cover picture and the photographs in the booklet were made by Philipp Gladstone.

Publication and promotion

The Waldbrand EP was first published on September 30, 2016 as a download. The album consists of five new studio recordings. A CD was released on October 21, 2016, and was available during Juno's Salvation Tour . After the tour, the autographed limited edition CD was available from Junos Merchandise Shop. In order to promote the album, Juno published the complete lyrics of one of the songs in a kind of countdown on their various social media channels.

background information

After two German-language titles had appeared on an official Junos sound carrier for the first time a few months earlier on Salvation , the Waldbrand EP was the first completely German-language sound carrier Junos to appear. In some interviews and a track-by-track for her follow-up album, DNA , Juno described the creation process and the decision to include German-language titles. In the current year she wrote a lot for other German artists and she was curious to see how she sounds today in her mother tongue. So far there have only been two early songs by her in German, which she published on her YouTube profile. In 2014 she published the song Herzchen and a year later Küss die kalten Jungs . She wanted to know whether her songs work in German and whether they can then be produced "extremely modern". The beginning of this “new journey” began with the song of the same name, forest fire . You wrote the piece out of nowhere. When she finished it was clear to her: "Yes, okay, this is the direction I want to go". She thinks she likes expressing herself so well in her mother tongue and not only does she have clarity, the people who listen to her music also have a clarity that did not necessarily exist before, unless they have dealt with it "extraordinarily hard".

content

All lyrics on the album are in German and are written by Madeline Juno and Oliver Som. Musically, the songs move in the area of electro pop , which was partly due to the inspiration of Calvin Harris and Major Lazer . All pieces are new compositions. Both the main vocals and the backing vocals were written by Juno himself.

Single releases

Forest fire

At the same time as the EP was released, the single of the same name was also released as a single download. On December 23, 2016, a 2-track single for Waldbrand was released as a download. This includes a remix by Helmo and a joint remix by Chris Avedon and Kevin Neon. The following album DNA contains an acoustic version of the song. Marvin Tyczkowski from the German-language e-zine Plattentests.de described Waldbrand as one of the “best songs ever” by Juno and highlighted it as a highlight of DNA , along with Three Words and Poison .

One day before the EP and single release, Juno published an official music video for Waldbrand on their YouTube channel. The script for Waldbrand was written by Juno himself. The shooting took place in Berlin on September 9, 2017. The music video can be divided into three sections, which can be seen alternately. The first scene shows Juno driving a loaded flatbed truck to a secluded spot, unloading boxes - including photo albums -, pouring gasoline over them and setting them on fire. In the second scene she can be seen in an old, partly ruined warehouse. First she puts on makeup and walks around in a white lace dress. After a short time, she sets a table and holds a candlelit dinner. She first talks to herself before realizing that she is alone when toasting. Then she drops the red wine glass and begins to rage, she only knocks over the chairs at first, then she clears the table partly and finally knocks it over completely. The third scene shows Juno lying in a bathtub. At first it cannot be determined in which liquid Juno is bathing, towards the end you can see how she filled the bathtub with petrol. The video ends with a long scene in which Juno lies in the said bathtub, lights a match and stares at it while it slowly sinks. The total length of the video is 3:35 minutes. Directed by Johannes Weber, the album was produced by Damian Pociapowicz. To date, the music video has had over a million clicks on YouTube (as of May 2018).

The piece is "so important" for Juno to this day that it captured an important time for her. That is why she decided to put forest fire on it again as a bonus title on DNA . She had the feeling that she owed the song, so the song is not available in a "fully produced version", but in acoustic form, "very raw" and in a way you don't even know it. The idea for the song came to her when she heard the term "forest fire". That sounded so nice to her and she was annoyed that forest fire sounded so harsh. But the more she thought about the word, the more she liked it. Through a forest fire , Juno (re-) discovered German as the language for her texts.
