The Unknown ( English "The Unknown") is the debut album by the German singer-songwriter Madeline Juno .

Creation and artwork

All tracks on the album were written jointly by Madeline Juno and Dave Roth, with David Jost co- writing three tracks . All tracks were mixed, produced and programmed by Patrick Benzer and Roth; Christian Fleps from Marquess was at their side during the programming and as a co-producer for the Tiel Feel You . The mixing took place with the help of the assistant Mathias Riediger. Roth was also an executive producer ( " Executive Producer ") operates. The mastering was done by Eastside Mastering, under the direction of Götz-Michael Rieth. The album was recorded in eight different recording studios in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The recordings were made by Joschka Bender (guitar and drums), Benzer (bass, guitar and drums), Steve Cooper (piano), Lars Ehrhardt (guitar), Manfred Faust (drums), Steffen Graef (guitar), Juno (vocals and guitar ), Kristian Nord (drums), Stefan Pintev ( string instruments ), Roth (vocals, guitar, piano and drums) and Marc Schettler (drums). The Unknown was released under the music labels Island Records and Polydor , published by David Jost Music Publishing, Emma's Park Music and Sony ATV , and distributed by Universal Music Publishing .

On the black and white held cover of the album is - next to artist name and album title - Juno's face, partially visible from her hair covered. The cover picture was shot in June 2013 by the Rotterdam- born singer Nishe, the artwork is from Angela Bolliger and Frank Steinhofer. Inside the CD is a 24-page booklet with illustrations by Juno himself. In the booklet, the titles are not listed numerically, but as chapters in Roman numerals .

Publication and promotion

The Unknown was first published on March 7, 2014 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album consists of 16 studio recordings and was released on CD and download. The album could already be pre-ordered three weeks earlier via iTunes . Every pre-orderer received the songs Error and Sympathy for download in advance .

On December 13th, 2013 it was announced that Juno wanted to compete in the German preliminary decision Our Song for Denmark for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 on March 13th, 2014 . Juno wanted to participate with the songs Error and Like Lovers Do and planned to sing the title Error in the second round . However, she was eliminated with Like Lovers Do in the first round. In the first round she had to admit defeat to her fellow competitors Elaiza , MarieMarie , Santiano and Unheilig .

In order to promote the album, there followed, among other things, live appearances in prime time with the title Error on Tribute to Bambi and Do you understand fun? as well as in the TV shows SWR3 latenight , the ARD morning magazine and in the NDR Talk Show . Juno appeared on the NDR Talk Show on October 11, 2013, which was Juno's first ever TV appearance. From February to March 2014 Like Lovers Do accompanied a commercial by VOX in which the show highlights for the month of March were presented. Thus, the song could be heard in various commercial breaks on VOX and other RTL group channels . In addition, both titles became soundtracks . Error was part of the soundtrack for the German comedy Fack ju Göhte and Like Lovers Do for the US disaster film Pompeii .

background information

Juno worked on her debut album for a total of four years. She started working back in 2009 at the age of 14. During the four years she occasionally uploaded some of her recordings to YouTube . One of the first songs that Juno wrote at the age of 14 is Melancholy Heartbeat .

In the run-up to the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, Juno stated that her favorite song on the album was Like Lovers Do , it was the last piece that was written for this album in November 2013.

content

All the lyrics on the album are in English and, like the corresponding compositions, were written by Madeline Juno and Dave Roth, three of whom they wrote together with co-author David Jost. Musically, the songs move in the area of pop music . All pieces are new compositions. Before the album was released, Juno published the tracklist for The Unknown on her Tumblr profile . On this, in addition to the later included titles, the songs All Across the Oceans and Stay were , which did not make it on the album. However, during her The Unknown Tour she played both titles. Juno herself describes her music as "hopeful, acoustic and melancholy music"; in summary, she calls her music "Heart-Core". In addition to the main vocals of Juno, the voice of Roth can be heard in the background in some of the songs. For the instrumentalization - besides the main instrumentalists Bender, Benzer, Brand, Graef, Juno, Mucha, Sahm and Sieferle - external studio musicians were hired (see contributors).

Reviews

The German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album with 3/5 stars. David Maurer described the album with its 16 songs as "a little too long", but also shows understanding that Juno wanted to fill more than half an hour after four years. The songs showed similarities in structure, mood and theme. This not only reduces the “recognition value” of individual pieces, but also arouses the “desire for more variety and courage”. The debut album certainly has room for improvement, but Juno shows the potential for more.

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated The Unknown with 5/10 points. Mark Read of the online editorial team described the album as well built and structured. Your English pronunciation is almost exemplary. Her voice skilfully serves all facets from fragile, to desperate, to flirtatious. Juno can also score points with the lyrics. Juno makes it really difficult not to like her or her music. But their debut album is a "slight disappointment". Juno wants too much with this. It is too long and in the end a bit too "monotonous". Seldom would tracks like Do It Again or If This Was a Movie "shake up" the thick blanket of despondency that lay over the album for almost an hour. On their own, songs like Error , The Unknown or Melancholy Heartbeat are really good. However, along the length of the album, everything flows together into one mass. After all, this does not leave an unpleasant aftertaste.
