action

The bank robber Zeki Müller is released from prison. He goes in search of the booty of his last raid in order to pay off his debts with the brothel operator Attila. Zeki's friend Charlie had buried the money on a construction site thirteen months earlier, assuming it would only be laying pipes. Zeki locates the prey using GPS under a newly built gym at the Goethe Comprehensive School in Munich . In order to get at the booty, Zeki applies for the vacancy of the deceased caretaker, but due to a misunderstanding is hired as a substitute teacher.

When Ingrid Leimbach-Knorr, the teacher of the difficult class 10b, tries to commit suicide and throws herself out of a window on the first floor, Director Gerster hands over the management of the class to the overly correct Elisabeth "Lisi" Schnabelstedt, who previously only worked as a trainee teacher at the Goethe- Comprehensive school worked. She cannot assert herself against the students and is driven to despair by some bad student pranks. Meanwhile, Zeki works on a tunnel in the school basement at night to get to the prey. So that he can present the necessary certificate for the teaching assignment to the director, he copies Lisi's. When she notices this, she blackmailed Zeki into taking over the completely undisciplined class 10b and thus getting her old seventh grade back.

With unconventional methods and with educational tips from Lisi and her roommate Caro, Zeki manages to tame the 10b and especially its leaders, Daniel ("Danger") and Chantal. Among other things, Zeki is improving Lisi's image with a graffiti spray campaign. A student sprays the title “Fack ju Göhte” on a train. Zeki also arranges a date for Lisi's younger sister Laura with her crush Danger and advocates Lisi's guardianship for Laura. Zeki and Lisi get closer and fall in love.

After working all night in the tunnel, Zeki finds his prey. Shortly afterwards, a stout schoolgirl breaks through the gym floor during an exercise on the jumping horse, whereupon Lisi discovers and explores the tunnel. Lisi overhears Zeki on the phone and learns about his past as a criminal, whereupon she breaks off contact with him. Depressed, Zeki wants to commit a robbery with his former inmate Paco. His girlfriend Charlie can convince Lisi that he wanted to change for Lisi. Also by choosing a photo of Lisi from her school days, which he found in a time capsule in the tunnel, as his motivational picture during a class action , Zeki demonstrates his affection for her.

Zeki breaks off the attack when students suddenly speak to him and in the background he sees the sprayed train with the inscription “Fack ju Göhte” driving past. He then visits Lisi with handcuffs he had put on himself and pretends to flee from the police. Shortly afterwards he redeems the terrified Lisi, explains her up and gives her a dress for the graduation party at school. He confesses to the principal that he is not a teacher at all and that he does not even have a high school diploma . However, she wants to keep him as a teacher and without further ado issues him a forged high school diploma . The 10b is now ready to follow the lessons and learn. Your grades in German, previously five or six, have improved significantly.

production

Casting

The role of Zeki Müller was written by Dierterkin for Elyas M'Barek . Both had already worked together on the television series Schoolgirls , Doctor's Diary and Turkish for Beginners as well as its cinema adaptation . The producer Lena Schömann praised M'Barek for his "unbelievable discipline", as the actor worked with a personal trainer five times a week months before shooting started and lost eight kilograms in order to have a well-trained upper body for beginners as in Turkish .

The female lead was taken on by the Grimme Prize winner Karoline Herfurth , who, after Mädchen, Mädchen and the sequel that appeared in 2004, was rarely seen in comedies. Lena Schömann justified the choice of Herfurth by saying that she had “a great feel for comedy and timing.” The role of director went to Katja Riemann , who had a guest appearance in the film for the series Turkish for Beginners . Uschi Glas can be seen in the supporting role of the burnt-out teacher Ingrid Leimbach-Knorr . She had already portrayed the sister of the main character Pepe Nietnagel in some parts of the comedy series Die Lümmel von der Erste Bank (1968–1972) .

A student role was given to Max von der Groeben , who in 2013 was awarded the Golden Camera with the Lilli Palmer & Curd Jürgens memory camera as the best young actor. Von der Groeben embodies the "leader" Danger in the film , while Jella Haase plays the student Chantal Ackermann . In 2011 she was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for Best Young Actress and in 2013 at the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Prize with the Günter Strack Television Prize for Best Actress.

publication

Four teasers were published on July 28, 2013, the official cinema trailer was released on October 10, 2013, and the premiere was on October 29, 2013 at the Mathäser Kino in Munich. On November 2, 2013, a one-week cinema tour through Germany and Austria with Bora Drachtkin , Elyas M'Barek and Karoline Herfurth started before the film opened in German cinemas on November 7, 2013. In Germany, the 25 cities included included u. a. Berlin , Cottbus , Dortmund , Hamburg , Karlsruhe , Cologne , Leipzig and Nuremberg . In Austria Linz , Salzburg and Vienna were visited.

The film was seen by 3 million cinema-goers 17 days after it was released, making it the most successful German film of the year in a very short time. In 2013 there were 5,622,273 visitors at the German box offices nationwide. Up to November 8, 2015, 7,394,469 visitors were counted. The film thus ranks first in terms of visitor numbers in the year it was released and fifth among the most successful German films in the Federal Republic since 1968. The international box-office result is over 72 million euros.

In January 2014 it was announced that the film would be offered for international release under the name Suck Me Shakespeer .

Dispute over trademark rights

Constantin Film Produktion GmbH wanted to register the film title in 2015 with the European Trademark Office (EUIPO) as a trademark for various merchandising items (including personal care products, jewelry and clothing). The company filed a complaint against the rejection of the application dated September 25, 2015. The Fifth Board of Appeal of the EUIPO rejected the request with the decision of December 1, 2016 on the grounds that the designation “Fack Ju Göhte” was contrary to morality.

The action brought against this at the General Court of the European Union was dismissed by judgment of January 24, 2018. The court essentially upheld the Office's decision. In the grounds of the judgment, the court stated that the average consumer in the German-speaking countries of the EU would equate the title with the vulgar English expression "fuck you" and the incorrectly spelled surname Goethe , which could offend many consumers. The fact that the expression was the title of a film that several million people had seen does not contradict this. Even if “some of the relevant public may consider an extremely crude expression to be acceptable”, this is not in itself sufficient “to regard this perception as the relevant”.

Constantin Film appealed this judgment to the European Court of Justice . With a judgment of February 27, 2020, the latter overturned the decisions of the General Court of the European Union and the EUIPO. The reason given by the ECJ was that it was not sufficiently taken into account that the film titles were “not perceived as morally reprehensible by the German-speaking general public”. Now the European Trademark Office has to decide again about registration as a European Union trademark.

Reviews

"Bora Dagtkin's second film directorial work 'Fack ju Göhte' is a cheeky and funny comedy with laughs every minute, a pinch of emotion and brilliant actors - in the tradition of his debut 'Turkish for Beginners'."

“Of course there are a few lengths here and there, and it also seems to be mandatory that a German film cannot function without a final reconciliation and bringing together all the characters. But when you consider how enjoyable you were entertained in the 120 minutes, that doesn't matter that much. "

- MovieMaze.de

"Despite its predictable plot, 'Fack ju Göhte' is an astonishingly entertaining and funny film, thanks in particular to the fast-paced production and the playful leading actor!"

- Spielfilm.de

“As a modern version of the embarrassingly uncomfortable 'Pauker' films, 'Fack ju Göhte' attracted an audience of millions into the cinemas. But as nice as it is that they enjoyed themselves, (...) Bora Drachtkin's film is nothing more than the hot air that the students produce here. "
