Salvation ( English "redemption") is the second studio album of German singer-songwriter Madeline Juno .

Creation and artwork

All the tracks on the album were written by Madeline Juno in collaboration with changing co-authors, only two tracks were written by Juno. On their previous debut album The Unknown Juno wrote all songs together with Dave Roth, on this album the two wrote only two pieces together. Most of the tracks were written in collaboration with the Finnish singer-songwriter Axel Ehnström , who wrote five pieces on the album. Furthermore, she wrote four songs each with Katrina Noorbergen, Michael Hunter Ochs and Kim W., as well as three songs each with Jonas W. Karlsson and Oliver Som and two songs with David Jürgens. The album was mainly mixed and produced by the producer trio Madizin, consisting of Patrick Benzner, Dave Roth and Serhat Sakin. With the exception of four titles, the production team was involved in all of the pieces in the production. With three titles, they produced most of the pieces together with Karlsson. In addition to some productions that they did alone, they often had other co-producers at their side. For three of the four titles that were not produced by Madizin, Oliver Som took over the production. There is also a production by Marcus Brosch. The mix was done for all songs except Stupid Girl , David Paulicke was responsible for this. The programming of the album was also largely carried out by the producer trio Madizin (11 tracks), some tracks were under the direction of David Jürgens (2 tracks), Jonas W. Karlsson (3 tracks), Oliver Som (3 tracks), Kim W. (4 titles) and other isolated contributors programmed. Salvation was released under the Embassy of Music label and distributed by Tonpool Medien. The album was recorded under the direction of Steffen Graef.

On the front of the turquoise cover - next to the artist name and album title - you can see Juno's upper body. She wears a black sweater through which a waterfall shimmers. On the back you can also see Juno's upper body, here a lake landscape shimmers through on her sweater. The photographs of the impressions of nature come from Maximilian Münch, Juno was photographed by Philipp Gladstone.

Publication and promotion

Salvation was first published on February 26, 2016 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album consists of 13 new studio recordings and is available on CD and download. A “Deluxe Edition” was published at the same time. This includes five more studio recordings and a remix to the song Stupid Girl, which was already on the album . The album was already available for pre-order on November 27, 2015. As an introducer bonus, the songs Into the Night and Salvation were released for download for all pre-orderers from January 22nd, 2016 .

In order to promote the album, there was a live appearance with Stupid Girl in prime time during the ESC Grand Prix Party 2016 from Hamburg's Reeperbahn . Further appearances followed in the ZDF morning magazine and with You Know What? in the ZDF television garden .

content

All lyrics of the regular album edition are in English and are written by Madeline Juno, who wrote the pieces together with changing co-authors. On the “Deluxe Edition” by Salvation, there are German-language pieces on an album by Juno for the first time with Küss' die kalten Jungs und Herzchen . Musically, the songs move in the area of pop music . All pieces are new compositions. In addition to the main vocals of Juno, the voice of Neele Ternes can be heard in the background of the song Stupid Girl . In addition to the main instrumentalists of the producer trio Madizin, the instruments were often played by the co-authors or external musicians (see contributors). Instruments such as bass, guitar and keyboard were recorded by the authors themselves for all the pieces, while more specialized instruments such as string instruments were recorded by external musicians.

Juno presented the two German-language pieces long before the album was released. She published videos for both songs on YouTube in which she played the pieces in an acoustic version . Juno presented the song Küss die kalten Jungs for the first time on May 28, 2015. Herzchen had already presented her on April 28, 2014. The song was written a year and a half earlier, i.e. before the release of the debut album The Unknown . She published little hearts with the words that she did not even think that she would cut the song again. It is one of her few German pieces that she has kept secret. But she doesn't want to be like that, versatility would delight us all.

Track by track

In the run-up to the album release, Juno described her songs in a "track-by-track series" which appeared in three episodes in January and February 2016.

Into the night

Into the Night ( English is "Into the Night") is one of two songs on the first album dock and completes the story. The piece takes up the quote "I Will Follow You into the Unknown" ( English "I will follow you into the Unknown ") from the song The Unknown . While Into the Night she then says "I Know I Will not Follow You Anymore, I Have to Go Alone" ( English "I know I will not follow you any longer, I have to go alone"). That says exactly what she feels, namely that she no longer needs lovesickness to write her songs. There was a lot more to draw inspiration from and that that was the beginning of the journey. It conveys a spirit of optimism and is therefore the album's intro.

No words

No Words ( english "No Words") was the second song that binds to the first album and say that everything was said and that there is a single word that they've add the've written about him on all songs. She was speechless and he didn't get a single song from her, but it was still a song and that was No Words .

Stupid girl

Stupid Girl ( English "stupid girl") is one of the most humorous and colorful pieces on the album and is about this big problem for women that you put the world at the feet of the guy, just do everything you can to show him what you are feels for him, but he doesn't seem to recognize it and you think: "Am I so stupid again and fall on my face for the tenth time and not learn, is that really the case?" That is what Stupid Girl would be about.

You know what?

You know what? ( English “Do you know what?”) is one of the most calming songs on the album for Juno, which is very acoustic and just wants to be heard and understood. She wrote the song with thoughts of her favorite film Restless . This is about Annabel and Enoch who are inexpressibly in love, but Annabelle is terminally ill and the two of them know that they don't have much time together. Juno transfer this story to her own story. This great love story, but knowing that you have to break up and only spend a certain amount of time together.

Yellow car

Yellow Car ( English "Yellow Car") is a song that describes this feeling when you, for example, smells something, see something or hear something you automatically connect with a reminder or combines with an event. Yellow car is not just a colorful object that says something to you, but it is this reminder that if you always see a yellow car now, you think of this one person, of all the things that you have experienced and associate with this person; and you would be reminded of it every day.

Quick sand

Quick Sand ( English "quicksand") is the beginning of a love story when you have just met a new person and you feel like you could ask 10,000 questions and somehow get pulled into this quicksand. You couldn't help yourself at all, because you didn't actually plan on falling in love, but you're already up to your chin in quicksand, addicted to this person and actually it's actually quite nice.

Please Don't Have Somebody Else

Please Do not Have Somebody Else ( English , "Please still have no other") also NOT TRADE from the beginning of a love story, if you have just met someone and just to wish that this someone no one else has waiting for him. You wish he was all alone and waiting for you to run towards each other and fall in love with each other. The song asks a lot of questions like, “Did this really just happen or did I make it up? Have you just really looked at me like that and maybe you think the same thing as me, do we feel the same or am I crazy again? I just make it up, it really just happened and for God's sake, I hope you don't have anyone else waiting for you. "

Salvation

Salvation ( English "redemption") is very important for Juno because she knew already before writing for this album that Salvation could mean. She knew that she had to pull herself out of the melancholy and find something that wasn't lovesick and still inspire her as strongly and move her to write. That was just love, but in a good way. To fall in love again, to find someone new to whom you would like to write 200,000 songs and still not have said everything. Salvation is just that moment when you understand: Okay, this person has just changed everything for me, for the better and I'm the better version of myself, thanks to you. Thank you I found redemption.

Cliché

Cliché ( English "cliché") deals with exactly this whole clichéd things that you do when one is incredibly in love and you love letters to write that are not understood or were not appreciated as one the wish. That you fly tens of thousands of miles just to see this person and you think that he should understand how much he means to me and that he actually couldn't know that I am sitting here on my cell phone waiting for a sign of life to come and it is so clichéd that I'm tearing my heart apart again and you don't seem to understand or notice anything about it, that is so clichéd that it happens to me again.

Hindsight

Hindsight ( English "forbearance") is one of the most storytelling songs, with a lot of text and a lot of situations in the stanzas. It's just about saying goodbye and saying goodbye and not really saying what's on your mind, regretting that afterwards and asking yourself the question: "Why didn't you just say what you felt?" Now you have to go again wait until you have the next opportunity.

On my toes

In On My Toes ( English "on my toes") have Juno at the beginning of the songwriting sessions had to write the task a song about exactly what I feel now. She had this picture in mind of a jewelry box that you open and then there is a little ballerina with a pretty melody. She introduced herself in this ballerina position and practically said in this song: “Okay, look at me and draw a blueprint, take notes, measure me, tell me if everything is right and okay and we fit together, go me to you? ”While he was about to find out if I was the right one, Juno will hold her breath and see if he builds a little home in her heart or not.

Less than a heartbreak

Less Than a Heartbreak ( English "Less than a heartbreak") was content Cliché quite similar and ask a lot of questions. How could it be that she invests everything of herself in him and he doesn't seem to understand what she's trying to do with it, that she just wants him to understand her, he means everything to her and that it may even be everything. As well as the question of what it is now with the two of them and maybe it doesn't come from him anymore, maybe it is now and she has to come to terms with it.

Youth

Youth ( English "Youth") is one of the first songs the Juno for Salvation 've written and easy IN QUESTION only from their youth. How she was different since she was 14, in contrast to her friends who spent their summer holidays on the beach. She was in the studio writing songs and producing her album . Juno made a conscious decision to hang out with people as old as her father, with contracts, things that are so far away for a teenage girl. She consciously decided to give away a large part of her youth, not to go to parties and get drunk and not to borrow her cousin's ID card to go to discos, but to make music.

Single releases

Stupid girl

Two weeks before the release of Salvation , the first single, Stupid Girl (Remixes), was released on February 2, 2016. The maxi single is available as a download and contains three remix versions by B-Case , Madizin and Sway Gray. Too Stupid Girl appeared two official music videos. The music videos were shot in Santa Monica , California in mid-January 2016. The first was released on February 13, 2016 with the album version of the song. This shows Juno's everyday life in Santa Monica. She leaves the house in the morning, walks the streets while singing the song and meets with her boyfriend at various locations. They meet for a coffee, in a laundry or for a drink in front of a building, laughing with each other on the one hand and arguing with each other on the other. The video ends with the two of them sitting on a couch together with Juno's head on his shoulder. The second music video for the remix version of Stupid Girl was released on March 20, 2016. The video can be divided into two sections. On the one hand, Juno can be seen singing the song in front of a turquoise wall; on the other hand, the music video shows scenes of Juno in a moving car while she sings the song. Both music videos were directed by Philipp Gladsome. The single missed a chart entry.

You know what?

Four months after the album was released, You Know What? (Madizin Single Mix) the second and so far last single from the album on June 3, 2016. The piece was released as a single download and, like its predecessor, was not published in its actual album, but in a remix version by Madizin. The music video for You Know What? (Madizin Single Mix) tells the story of a young couple, played by Juno and Chris Brenner. Juno takes on the role of a patient. At the beginning you can see happy scenes of the two, towards the end you see Juno lying in bed and her eyes slowly close. A scene follows in which Brenner is sitting in front of the empty bed and in the final scene he is sitting on a beach with a view of the sea, with a silhouette of Juno next to him for a short time . As with the two previously published music videos, the director was again Philipp Gladsome. The second single also missed a chart entry.

In addition to the two official single releases, two promo singles appeared with the songs Into the Night (November 27, 2015) and Salvation (January 15, 2016). Both singles were released as single downloads. A poetry video was released for both promotional releases. The text in the lyric videos is shown in both songs with the face of a female person as a cartoon. In Into the Night a female person is to see whose spirit she leaves and solitary walks through the world. In Salvation is the story of a female person who meets a male person, falls in love and spends time with them. Salam Alhassan directed Salvation . After more than a year, No Words, the third and so far last promo single, was released on February 3, 2017. A music video was also released for this. The video only shows Juno sitting on a chair and singing the song while she is filmed from different positions and illuminated with different neon lights.

Only the album titles Broken , Küss' die kalten Jungs , On My Toes and Safe Kind of Sadness were not played during the concert series.

Reviews

The American music blog , which is run under the direction of Bradley Stern, placed Salvation at position 10 of the best albums of 2016. He described Juno's singing as a mixture of Ellie Goulding meets Tove Lo and arranged the lyrics in the form like this one from Taylor Swift . There would be some kind of magic in the melodies, from the enchanting ode to fleeting romances like in You Know What? to the shimmering title song.

The German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album with 2/5 stars. Kai Butterweck rated the album rather negative and is of the opinion that the title of "Salvation" ( English "redemption") make the product "phase, all honor." The entry trimmed the high expectations back to normal. Juno purrs almost emotionlessly through a monotonous network of interchangeable pop and electro sounds. The pieces Into the Night and No Word start similarly soporific, before the songs get the curve towards the chorus and encourage the listener's fingers to snap along for the first time with vigor and lively singing. Thumping beats and a lot of electronic hoopla drive the first single Stupid Girl towards the dance floor, but it doesn't get stuck in your ears. Lively campfire guitars combined with sugary additions from the retort sound in You Know What like a desperate attempt to mix yesterday and today. Whereby the here and now is much more difficult than what caused a stir in March 2014. Only Juno's elf-like voice, keep the phone from falling asleep. Juno should perhaps take more time for the next attempt. It would be a shame if the potential, which you don't find on every corner in this country, were simply wasted.

The German radio station MDR Jump drew Salvation of as "Album of the Week".

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated Salvation, like its predecessor, with 5/10 points. Lena Zschirpe from the online editorial team described the album as just another inconspicuous electro-pop record that is neither positive nor negative. Even starting with Into the Night causes the first disappointment. Only after a minute does the piece begin to develop into a more interesting construct, but the singing unfortunately remains as monotonous as it is callous. Stupid girl start with rich beats, electronic climes and Juno's voice, which here can cover up her other fragility. Although the sound is not completely obtrusive, the previous single seems too overloaded for the Black Forest girl - and you can't even accuse Juno of making serious mistakes. As with her debut, she only wants too much and everything at once. With You Know What , for example, she falls into old patterns, modestly plucks the guitar and presents the elf-like facets of her singing. Quicksand and No Words would at least manage to play in the top "pop league". Juno experiment with drums and rhythms, while pleasant catchy tunes develop by themselves. For the first time, the impression is not created that Juno is singing in a role that she doesn't even fit into. That she should turn to shallow guitar pop again is not expected of her talent. What is needed is less of a requirement to want to be everything at the same time. And maybe Juno will screw it down someday.
