The Walkersbach is a creek in northern Baden-Württemberg of just over 8 km in length. It flows into the Rems from the right below Lorch in the Ostalbkreis .

geography

Source and history

The Walkersbach arises in the Welzheimer Forest on the southern flank of the narrow, ribbon-shaped Lias plateau between the middle Wieslauf - and the Leintal in the north and the Remstal in the south. About one kilometer southwest of the central street triangle of Welzheim - Breitenfürst it springs Hang Won at the top Talwaldrand in Welzheimer book bumming . From here on, it flows first of all in a southerly and then in a south-easterly direction in an initially widening forest valley. On the first kilometer of its course, its streambed often lies in a steep-walled trough; here as well as further down to the entrance to the Remstal, it takes in numerous tributaries from such blades with strong relief . Then the bottom of his valley is about 390  m above sea level. NN flatter and from the left the K 1886 descends in serpentines into it, which will accompany the stream almost to its mouth, from the district boundary in the lower valley as K 3270.

A little later it reaches the border of an initially narrow clearing on the valley floor. About 2 km below the Walkersbach source, the Schautenbach becomes the first major tributary. From the Alfdorf - Pfahlbronner Schenkenhöfle the valley direction begins to widen up to half the slope height, here the municipality of Alfdorf borders on the left bank and the municipality of Plüderhausen on the right bank of the brook, from the right the Schützenbach flows towards the homestead . After that, the only larger settlement in the valley, the village of Walkersbach, is on the Plüderhausener Ufer . At the footbridge over the stream, the (upper) Haselbach flows from the left , soon afterwards the Kühnenbach , the longest tributary in the upper reaches , at the sewage treatment plant . Then the Walkersbach turns its course to the south and the clearing narrows again to the valley floor.

After about one kilometer the stream passes the Pfahlbronner mill on its right bank; Here the Alfdorf-Pfahlbronner district extends exceptionally over the right valley floor. About one and a half kilometers after the Kühnenbach tributary, the Walkersbach leaves the Rems-Murr district behind and enters the urban area of Lorch in the Ostalb district . It turns to the southeast and after about a kilometer passes the first Lorch settlement, the Metzelhof farmstead on the left side hill with the first slope that is again free of forests since Walkersbach. Here the Nitzelbach reaches him from the left . Immediately afterwards, in the same position by the stream, the hamlet of Strauben and the Weitmarser Sägmühle in the triangle of the (lower) Haselbach , which in turn flows in from the left, follow; it is the longest tributary of the Walkersbach ever.

At the entrance to the Remstal, between the brook and the 0.6 km long Mühlkanal, which is parallel to the right, is the Walkersmühle, above which is the village of Weitmars on the right-hand mouth of the river. The canal soon flows back and the stream then runs another half a kilometer southwest over the Remsaue, where it crosses, among other things, the federal highway 29 and the Remsbahn . Then the Walkersbach flows after a run of 8.4 km at the western tip of the nature reserve “Lorcher Baggerseen” at 273.2  m above sea level. NN from the right into the Rems.

Catchment area

The Walkersbach has a catchment area of 17.1 km². Less than a third of these lie to the left of the stream, because longer tributaries almost only reach it from the left.

In the north, the flax , which flows east to the upper Kocher , competes . All other adjoining catchment areas also drain to the Rems. In the east the watershed runs to the Aimersbach , which flows into Lorch itself, in the southwest very close to the short Aitenbach , in the rest of the west close to the Bärenbach , which flows into Plüderhausen a little down the valley. In the northwest the Wieslauf competes , which only flows further down the Rems at Schorndorf .

geology

The course of the Walkersbach lies entirely in the Upper and Middle Keuper . It rises in the tuberous marl ( Trossingen formation ) and then runs through the entire sequence of layers down to the Gipskeuper ( grave field formation ), which it only reaches shortly before entering the Remstal. In the north of the catchment area, on both sides of the upper Walkersbach and its left inlet Kühnenbach, the surrounding heights are plateaus in the Lias α, in the south they only reach the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein Formation ) , with the exception of an isolated occurrence of the Lias α on the right side of the Hohbergkopf . .

history

There is evidence that firewood has been transported on the Remsseitenbach Walkersbach, Wieslauf and Bärenbach since 1628 , largely as logs. Since the natural water flow of the brooks would not have been sufficient, raft or swell lakes were created. In 1742, for example, the Schorndorf forester from Grassenberg had an older pond, located around 800 meters south of the village of Walkersbach, expanded from the Vogel grave in Böblingen to the Walkersbacher Tal reservoir. According to a floor plan mapped by the ducal sworn surveyor Christoph David Benignus from Schorndorf on July 17, 1791, the dam was 304 feet (87 meters) long and 30 feet (8.6 meters) high. In 1831 the dam was improved by a brick wall and at the same time the course of the stream below the lake was straightened and its gradient leveled. The amount of water accumulated in the lake was sufficient for two to three days of rafting. The millers at the brook had to stop their operations during the rafting and help with the rafting. From the mouth of the Walkersbach, the wood was rafted on the Rems to Neckarrems , where it was collected in a “ wood garden” and loaded onto Neckar ships. The flowable length of the Walkersbach was about five kilometers. Even before the Remsbahn went into operation in 1861, rafting on the Walkersbach was stopped. The dam and bridge path, which is still called the "Seedamm" for forestry today, was pierced after the rafting industry was abandoned; the remains of the dam can still be seen today.

At the sulfur smelter , attempts were made at times to break down iron. The existing lawn iron stone deposits, however, were not rich enough so that the attempt was made.
