geography
River course
The Wieslauf rises about 2.5 km west-northwest of Kaisersbach from several sources on the edge of the clearing island of Höfenäckerle at about 522 m above sea level. NHN . After a short run, sometimes under the name Sommerbach , it is dammed up to the Ebnisee . Below the lake, it flows south with a relatively slight gradient in a forest area.
At the Laufenmühle , a stop on the Wieslauftalbahn , it turns to the northwest and digs a deep, partially inaccessible valley. In this steep section it runs in several waterfalls over the layer boundaries of Lower Stubensandstein , Upper Bunten Marl and Lower Bunten Marl . Then it leaves the forest near Klaffenbach and enters the upper Wieslauftal.
From Rudersberg you run south again, now in the very wide and open part of the Wieslauftal. Almost ten kilometers further down the valley, its lower course, which is mostly accompanied by flood dams, flows in the east of Schorndorf at 248.2 m above sea level. NHN in two arms (name of the downstream: "Altlache") in the Rems.

The Wieslauf turns sharply to the right just before its mouth. A trickle branch from it then flows in an approximately south-south-west direction down the Wieslauftalbahnbrücke after a run of 23.7 km from the right into the Rems . This official mouth of the Wieslauf is located in a wood, is overgrown with a bush and is difficult to recognize as the mouth. ⊙
Most of the water of the Wieslauf, however, flows in an estuary known as the Altlache straight ahead west-southwest and flows 1.0 km further downstream between the bridges of Gottlob-Bauknecht-Strasse and Benzstrasse from the right into the Rems. ⊙
During renaturation measures for the Remstal Garden Show 2019 , a short left tributary was created there, which already runs into the Rems about fifty meters above the previously existing estuary. ⊙
Rafting on the Wieslauf
From 1746 until the first half of the 19th century, firewood for Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg was rafted on the Wieslauf . Loose logs about 1.20 m long were washed up and thrown into the river bed below the Ebniseedamm at a drop point. Then the valve was opened, the water flowing out of the lake washed the logs on the Wieslauf to Schorndorf and from there further down the valley on the Rems. The dammed water of the Ebnisees was enough for five to six days of rafting. Every 50 meters along the river, so-called boot jacks were posted, named after their shoes, who used long poles to ensure that the logs stayed in the current and drifted down the valley. They also had to stop wood theft.
In contrast to the Isar and some of the Black Forest rivers , there was no log rafting on the Wieslauf .
The history of rafting on the Wieslauf ended in 1861 with the commissioning of the Remstalbahn , and in 1862 on the Rems too. The wood was then transported on carts to Schorndorf and from there on by train to Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg.
Flood
On January 13, 2011, continuous rain and melting snow led to a flood that flooded parts of Rudersberg, Miedelsbach and Haubersbronn . The Rems level below the Wieslauf estuary in Schorndorf showed the highest water level ever measured.
traffic
In the lower and middle area up to the Laufenmühle stop, the Wieslauftalbahn opens up the valley. The Wieslauftal Cycle Path , a circuit from Schorndorf via Rudersberg, the Laufenmühle, the Ebnisee, Welzheim and Rudersberg back to Schorndorf, accompanies the river for almost its entire course.
