The Ebnisee is about 6.3  ha large reservoir on the territory of the municipality Kaiserbach in Baden-Württemberg Rems-Murr-Kreis . It was created in the 18th century as a swell pond for rafting and is now mainly used for local recreation.

It was named after the town of Ebni , west of the lake , which, like the lake and its banks, belongs to the municipality of Kaisersbach . The area of the neighboring town of Welzheim extends almost to the south-eastern shore of the lake, and a residential area near the lake has been called Ebnisee since 1952 .

A surrounding nature reserve is named after the lake.

geography

The Ebnisee is located northwest of Welzheim and about half a straight line between Althütte in the West and in the East Kaiserbach 470.6  m above sea level. NHN and on the northern edge of the Vorderen Welzheimer Forest , which is part of the Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land , to the Murrhardter Wald in the neighboring natural area of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains in the north. It lies entirely within the contour of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park , which extends far beyond the boundaries of the similarly named natural area.

The uppermost Wieslauf flows through the lake and drains it south to the Rems . Its dam, over which the L 1020 runs, dams the young river. The lake is on average 2 to 3 m deep, holds a storage volume of about 163,000 m³ and has a shore length of about 1.5 km.

history

Winter panorama on the Ebnisee

The Ebnisee dam, which was completed in 1745, was supposed to enable rafting, whereby the abundance of wood in the Welzheimer forest could be transported more easily and cheaply to the royal cities of Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg , where there was great demand. The timber industry in the area around today's lake was previously no longer competitive with that of other regions where rafting was carried out much earlier, e.g. B. on the Enz , Nagold and Würm .

However, the normal water flow of the Wieslauf was not sufficient for rafting. That is why the water from the melting snow and the spring rain was held back in the reservoir. With the strong runoff after the sea lock was opened, the wood felled in winter and transported to the Ebnisee by sledge could be washed over Wieslauf and Rems to the Neckar. See Nestelberg – Ebnisee toboggan run . The amount of stored water allowed about a week to float. In summer the lake was dry and was used as a meadow and pasture.

The opening of the Remstal and later the Wieslauftalbahn made rafting superfluous; it was discontinued in 1861. The Ebnisee was dammed again in 1884 for flood protection and the use of hydropower. It became increasingly important for tourism in the Welzheim forest; today the lake is a popular bathing water and recreational area .

Landscape protection area

As early as 1940, the area around the Ebnisee was declared a nature reserve Ebniseegebiet . The area established by the ordinance of November 4, 1968 includes the uppermost catchment area of the Wieslauf down the valley to about the Kaisersbach hamlet of Schmalenberg; there is forest on large parts of it. The lake and its surroundings are in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park .
