From 1932 to 1936 Walter Heidrich was in charge of the Sudetenbühne , about which he published his "[...] report on 2½ years of work" in 1936 via the Sudetendeutschen Verlag .
At the time of National Socialism , Heidrich took over the management of the State Theater of Saxony from 1937 to 1939 . During the Second World War Heidrich served temporarily as a soldier , but was released from active military service in 1942 and 1944 in order to take over the management in Reichenberg at the place of his debut.
After the war, Walter Heidrich came to Hanover , where, with the approval of the British occupiers, he began building a “ state stage ” as early as 1946 . Initially as a small private company, Heidrich founded the "Landesbühne Niedersachsen Süd" in 1952, which he headed from the beginning and under the new name Landesbühne Hannover until 1964. The ensemble gave its first performance on October 7, 1952 in the Haus der Jugend with Friedrich Schiller's Kabale und Liebe . After the first financial support from the state of Lower Saxony , Heidrich initiated the first guest performance in the Herrenhausen Gardens in 1953 . In 1956 Reinhold Rüdiger was hired, who succeeded Heidrich as director from 1964.
After his activities in Hanover, Walter Heidrich headed the Theater Lübeck from 1964 to 1968 and later also worked in Hamburg .
