Adolf Walther Hertzsch (born October 13, 1901 in Zwickau , † 1975 ) was a German agricultural scientist and botanist .

Life

Hertzsch was born as the son of a secret government councilor in Zwickau, Saxony. There he also attended school until he switched to grammar school in Bautzen , which he graduated from high school in 1919. In November 1923 he began studying at the Agricultural Institute of the University of Göttingen .

Hertzsch did his doctorate in 1927 at the Agricultural University Berlin under Erwin Baur under the title Contributions to infectious chlorosis via marbled Abutilon forms. As a result of his studies, he was able to differentiate between two forms of chlorosis.

In 1933 he became head of the Klein Blumenau branch of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Breeding Research of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science, which was newly established by Erwin Baur . His tasks included testing plants for winter hardiness; for this he published his work on peas; and for varieties from the parent institute for further properties. In addition, he headed the forage plant breeding department, which focused on grasses and clover species. In this position he also wrote articles for the Reichsnährstand .

In 1935 he married Irene Marie Constanze Schultze-Naumburg, a daughter of Paul Schultze-Naumburg , in Salzburg. In 1941 Hertzsch was employed as a consultant in the Reichskommissariat Ostland (RKO) in Riga in the research center of the Department of Food and Agriculture. There he also headed the new Laukischken branch of the Müncheberg Institute in the Labiau district in East Prussia. His deputy was Joachim Hackbarth . He was active in the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and began in 1938 with experiments on species and genus hybridization of forage grasses.

After the war, Hertzsch last worked as a department head at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne-Vogelsang .

Together with Werner Plarre , he published a number of articles on cultivated plants , such as: B. the white clover or the leaf cabbage .
