Wapienica ( German Lobnitz ) is a district ( Osiedle ) of Bielsko-Biała in the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

geography

Wapienica is located on the border of the Silesian Foothills ( Pogórze Śląskie , in the north) and the Silesian Beskids ( Beskid Śląski , in the south), on the Wapienica River , about 4 km west of the city center, about 60 km south of Katowice .

The district has 2588.56 hectares .

Not far away is the Szyndzielnia cable car (German Kamitzer Platte ).

history

The place is in the Olsa region (also Teschener Silesia , Polish Śląsk Cieszyński ).

It was founded in the 16th century and was first mentioned in 1571 as Lopnitz . It was settled by Germans, but the name was derived from the Slavic name of the Łopienica river flowing through it . Ultimately, the place and the river were then renamed Wapienica.

Politically, the village belonged to the Duchy of Teschen , the feudal rule of the Kingdom of Bohemia in the Habsburg Monarchy . Since 1572 it belonged to the dominion of Bielitz (from 1754 Duchy of Bielitz ).

After the abolition of patrimonial it formed from 1850 a municipality in Austrian Silesia , district and judicial district Bielitz . In the years 1880–1910 the population rose from 792 in 1880 to 823 in 1910, the majority of them were German-speaking (between 66.1% in 1890 and 90.2% in 1880), also Polish-speaking (between 9.7 % in 1880 and 33.8% in 1890). In 1910 63.7% were Protestant, 34.3% Roman Catholic, there were 7 Jews and 10 other faiths. The village belonged to the Bielitz-Biala language island .

In 1920 after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the end of the Polish-Czechoslovak border war , Wapienica came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II .

The tool and saw factory Globus (Polish: Fabryka Pił i Narzędzi ), founded in 1921 , is based in Wapienica.

Between 1954 and 1972 the village was the administrative seat of the Gromada Wapienica . From 1973 to January 1, 1977 it was the seat of Gmina Wapienica before it became part of the city of Bielsko-Biała.
