Vassily Engelhardt ( Russian Василий Васильевич Энгельгардт * April 1 . Jul / 12. April  1758 greg. , † May 12 jul. / 24. May  1828 greg. In Olschana ) was a deutschbaltisch - Russian officer and statesman.

Life

Engelhardt's father Wassili Andrejewitsch Engelhardt from the Baltic German Engelhardt family was captain of the Smolensk Szlachta . Engelhardt's mother Jelena Alexandrovna Potjomkina was Prince Potjomkin's sister . Engelhardt's sisters Alexandra (1754–1838), Warwara (1757–1815), Jetkaterina (1761–1829) and Tatjana (1769–1841) played important roles at the court of Catherine II.

Engelhardt initially embarked on a military career and commanded the Belarusian Hussar Regiment in 1778 . In 1790 he became General - Porutschik .

In 1791 Engelhardt inherited from Prince Potjomkin in the Smolensk governorate his family seat and estate Tschischowo ( Duchowschtschina Rajon ), whose administrator was Uncle Michail Glinkas , and the Pokrovskoye estate ( Demidowski rajon ) with the Villa Rotonda ( reconstructed in 1923 by Ivan Yegorowitsch Starow ), which was demolished in 1786 .

In 1797 Engelhardt became a Senator and Real Privy Councilor (2nd class ). In 1800 he left the civil service.

1813 Engelhardt acquired in the province Little Russia from the heirs of Count Zavadovsky the estate Ljalitschi ( Rajon surazh ) with that of Giacomo Quarenghi built castle Yekaterinodar with 250 rooms, porcelain tiles , malachite - fireplaces , magnificent library and life-size of St. Catherine Statue (1780-1795) and the Church of Saint Catherine (1793–1799). In the 1850s the castle belonged to the painter and music lover Nikolai Atryganjew , who welcomed many well-known cultural workers here. The castle then fell into disrepair and was only a ruin after the October Revolution . The Katharina Church was used until 1937. In 1974 the church was recognized as an architectural monument. In 2011, the restoration of the Katharina Church began. In 2013 the work was stopped.

Engelhardt was known as a good manager of his estates. He took care of the needs of his farmers and strictly pursued theft and alcoholism. In Tschischowo he had a stone church built, under whose altar he was buried.

Engelhardt had five children with a “ Polish princess” who were recognized in 1801. Andrei Wassiljewitsch (1780-1834) became Polkownik . Wassili Wassiljewitsch (1785–1837) retired as a Polkownik and organized the magnificent 1759–1761 by F.-B. Rastrelli built Engelhardt's house at 30 Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg for public concerts and costume balls , to which members of the imperial family also came. He associated with Pushkin in the St. Petersburg Literary Association and the St. Petersburg Theater Association . Alexandra Wassiljewna (1787-1808) married the captain Iwan Bogdanowitsch Krajewski, who died in 1858. Ekaterina Vasilyevna (1797-1818) married General Nikanor Mikhailovich Swetschin . Pavel Wassiljewitsch (1798–1849) became the landlord of the serf Taras Shevchenko after the death of his father .
