Location of Ottrau-Weißenborn in Hesse

Weißenborn is a district of Ottrau in the Hessian Schwalm-Eder district and has about 377 inhabitants.

geography

Weißenborn is about four kilometers northeast of Ottrau and is the highest district of the municipality. The village nestles against the foothills of the Knüllgebirge , whose gradually flatter hills are picturesquely called 'Cherry Forest', very archaic 'Kalkberg' and, in a very threatening historical way, 'Robbers Forest'. The highest point is the 533  m above sea level. NN high Kalkberg, the southernmost mountain of the Knüllgebirge. It connects the Hochknüll with the Rimberg .

history

Weißenborn was first mentioned in a document in 1309 as "Wisenburn". Over the centuries the place underwent numerous name changes. In the meantime it was called "Wiesenbrunn", from which the name Weißenborn gradually developed.

On April 1, 1972, Weißenborn was incorporated into the Ottrau community.

The association Universi Villani Weißenborn e. V., whose members are committed to preserving the traditions of the place, organized the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the village in 2009.

Buildings

The core of the church in Weißenborn comes from the Romanesque period (monolithic arched window from around 1200). It was changed around 1300 and was presumably given a late Gothic side portal at the same time as the church in Hauptschwenda, which is located in the same parish .

The church in Weißenborn is probably the oldest church in the Ottrau community. From 1735 it was transformed into a simple preaching church in the baroque style. The altar substructure, the baptismal font and the wall cross were made of stainless steel in 2004 . A special feature is the choir organ of the local organ builder Peter Battenberg, which was built around 1913 as a house organ. Almost one hundred years after the creation of this historical instrument, the wife of the late grandson Ernst Battenberg (heir to the organ builder) gave the instrument to the parish of Olberode for free use. The former owner Liesel Battenberg was delighted that the organ found its place of honor in Weißenborn's church. The church organs in the churches of Christerode and Bieben come from the same organ builder .

Culture and sights

Numerous species of wild orchids grow in the very idyllic nature reserve on the Kalkberg, located directly on the outskirts . A little outside Weißenborn there is a romantic place with a small pond , which is called by the inhabitants "Gänskutt". As the name suggests, geese were tended here in earlier times .

Sports

Weißenborn has three sports clubs . The SV 1968 e. V. Weißenborn, the TTC Weißenborn and the Kickers Weißenborn.
