Weihern ( Bavarian : Weiern ) is a village and district of the Upper Palatinate town of Wörth on the Danube in the Regensburg district in Bavaria .

Geographical location

The Weihern district is located six kilometers northeast of Wörth in the Falkensteiner Vorwald . The village is located in a large basin surrounded by wooded mountains: Ochsenberg (607 m), Weiherlänge (665 m), Gscheitberg (579 m) and Hohenstein (638 m). Immediately to the north begins the district of Cham , northeast of the district of Straubing-Bogen and thus the administrative district of Lower Bavaria .

history

Catholic subsidiary church of Mary's name, ponds

The place name is derived from settlement near the ponds . There are several ponds in the village , the largest of which (3 ha) has been around since ancient times. The village emerged like Hungersacker in a cleared island . The monastic clearing and settlement waves were completed around the year 900. At this time ponds should have been built; there is no historical evidence for this. In 1384 Weihern is mentioned for the first time in a book by the Hochstift Regensburg with records of the possessions there. Weihern originally belonged to the kingdom of Wörth and was subject to the local court. In the Middle Ages until the 19th century, however, the villages of Weihern and Hornau belonged to the rule of Wiesenfelden and the district court of Mitterfels .

In 1818 the Kingdom of Bavaria received a constitution . This also regulated the structure of the communities and districts. At that time the community Weihern was founded with the hamlet of Hornau. In the years 1818 to 1850 Weihern was under the jurisdiction of the Regenstauf Regional Court , after which it came back to the Wörth Regional Court. There have been repeated attempts to unite the Hungersacker and Weihern communities into one community. The project failed due to resistance from both communities.

In 1932 and 1933 there were further advances on the part of the Regensburg district office. However, both communities refused again. Hungersacker was also superior to the municipality of Weihern in terms of area, population and tax strength (figures from 1908).

Hungersacker 635.88 ha area / 132 inhabitants

Weihern 204.67 ha area / 103 inhabitants

The last mayor of the Weihern community was Xaver Laumer from Hungersacker (1966–1971).

Population development

In 1970 the population of the village Weihern was 64 inhabitants, in 1987 it was 74 inhabitants. The total of the population of all districts of the former municipality Weihern (Hafnerhof, Hinterzirnberg, Hungersacker, Oberelend, Piehl, Unterelend, Vorderzirnberg, Hornau and Weihern) was 194 inhabitants in 1970, in 2000 there were 225 inhabitants.

school

In 1928 a school building with a teacher's house was built in Weihern for the former communities of Hungersacker, Wachsenberg and Weihern on the initiative of the citizen Johann Soller. Before that, the school for these places was in Hofdorf . The single-class school was dissolved as part of the Bavarian school reform of 1967 and the students have been taught in Wörth an der Donau since then .

Territorial reform

Under the influence of the American military government , it was decided on July 11, 1945 to merge the Hungersacker and Weihern communities to form the Weihern community.

Since the regional reform of April 1, 1971, Weihern has belonged to the city of Wörth an der Donau as a district.

Culture and sights

The center of the village is the church, a former forester's house and the former school.

church

It was not until 1933 that the Roman Catholic ancillary church of Mariae in the Pondorf parish, Hofdorf branch in the diocese of Regensburg was built in Weihern, also on the initiative of the citizen Johann Soller (1888–1961) ; it was inaugurated on September 24, 1933 by Monsignor Pohl from Regensburg. The master builder was Georg Weikl from Wörth, while Max Wittmann from Schwabelweis was the architect. The church has a gable-facing hall with a hipped gable roof and shingled roof turrets, there are two bells in the tower, the altar is designed in baroque styles. In the middle of the altar is the patroness of the church, a statue of Our Lady, which was restored in 1993, to the left and right of it depictions of Saints Joseph and Sebastian, which were donated by a monastery. The colored windows of the church show the heart of Jesus and Mary as well as the saints Leonhard, Wolfgang and Florian. In 1973 the first major renovation of the church took place, in 1979 and 1983 new lighting and electric bells were installed, and inside and outside were renovated. In 1984 the 50th anniversary of the church was celebrated. In 2001 an organ was purchased, in 2007 the tower was given a shingle roof and the church was renovated inside and out again. In 2009 a memorial plaque was placed in the church for Johann Soller.

prehistory

Already in 1884 citizens of Weiher applied to the bishop in Regensburg to be allowed to build a church. Another attempt was refused in 1908. In 1931 the episcopal ordinariate finally accepted. A church building association was founded with Johann Soller at its head. Soller financed the property from his own resources and was supported by both the citizens of Hungersacker and Weihern through donations and labor.
