Wenisbuch is one of two cadastral communities and a village in the Mariatrost district in the Styrian capital Graz . The eponymous village is located in the extreme northwest of the city and is rural.
geography
The Wenisbuch cadastral community extends from the northwestern outskirts of Weinitzen and Fölling to the Leechwald not far from the city center and also includes the villages of Kroisbach and Rettenbach. With an area of 949 hectares, it is the third largest cadastral community in Graz after Gösting and Webling . In the area around the village of Wenisbuch are the famous Platte and Hauenstein hills and the popular excursion destination Rettenbachklamm . The main settlement on a ridge between the two elevations can be reached from several directions via local roads.
The Wenisbucher Tertiary Basin represents a peripheral bay of the Graz Basin filled with Sarmatic sediments, sands and clays . It is drained by the Rettenbach to the Mariatroster Bach .
history
The high valley of Wenisbuch was already considered fertile in the late Middle Ages and was settled by farmers in times of peace. The name Wernher (i) spurch has been handed down from the early 14th century for a refuge on the Kogelberg to the south . In dialect , the name was slipped to Wenisbuch over the centuries .
In 1766, hard coal deposits were discovered at Mariatrost and orders were to have them examined by the mining court administrator at state expense. In the greenish tegeln between Tullgraben and Wenisbuch a thin brown coal seam split into two banks was found. 1856 got trades Josef Rothler from Mount Commissariat Voitsberg a Schurfbewilligung for cadastral Wenisbuch granted. In the same year he registered a clearance over the Wastl farmer's pasture and had a total of 800 t of hard coal-containing material extracted by the end of 1857. Probably through the opening of the Mariatroster Bahn , lignite mining in Wenisbuch was stimulated again in 1898 and continued until 1920, especially in a ditch between the village and the Platte.
Economy and Infrastructure
While the cadastral community has a wide range of functionality due to its size, the actual village of Wenisbuch has a rural, rural character. Single-family houses and some farms are lined up along Wenisbucher Strasse . There is also an inn and two wine taverns . The surrounding areas are determined by grassland and two fruit-growing areas to the west and south of the main settlement.
