The Obervermuntwerk (OVW) (now number I) is a high-pressure storage power plant operated by illwerke vkw AG on Lake Vermunt in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . It is part of the Obere Ill-Lünersee power plant group.
At 1743 m above sea level A. Lying on the banks of the Vermuntsee in the municipality of Gaschurn , the power plant uses the height difference of 287 m to the Silvretta reservoir above to generate electrical energy . The power plant has a bottleneck capacity of 29 megawatts and a standard work capacity (average annual energy production) of 45 GWh .
history
The construction of the Obervermuntwerk (I) began in 1938. Five years later, in 1943, the power plant was put into operation. At that time, the 19 MVA three-phase generators were the largest hydropower generators manufactured in Austria.
Since the Obervermuntwerk II went into operation in 2019, it and the Obervermuntwerk I have been connected to the Silvretta reservoir via a joint, newly constructed pressure tunnel. The dismantling of the old above-ground pressure pipeline therefore began in summer 2020.

A 3.27 km long, above-ground pressure pipeline with an inner diameter of 2.40 to 2.10 meters led from the Silvretta reservoir ( 2030 m above sea level ) to the power house.
The power plant has two vertical-axis machine groups. Each machine group consists of a Francis spiral turbine , pressure regulator and three-phase generator . With a flow rate of 7 m 3 / s, a raw head of 291 m and a speed of 600 min −1, each turbine generates a nominal output of 18.1 MW. The generators have a nominal voltage of 6 kV and a nominal power of 19 MVA.
The turbine bottleneck capacity of the OVW is 29 MW, these have an annual working capacity of around 45 million kWh (primary energy).
The voltage of the generators is converted to 20 kV via block transformers. The power plant is connected to the power grid on the 20 kV level via an indoor switchgear . The energy is transported to Trominier by underground cable, from there to the Vermuntwerk substation by overhead line . A house transformer with an output of 0.15 MVA is available for self-supply.
