Werner Braun (musicologist)

Werner Hermann Georg Braun (born May 19, 1926 in Sangerhausen ; † August 24, 2012 in Saarbrücken ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Werner Braun studied from 1946 to 1950 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg musicology with Max Schneider and school music with Fritz Reuter with the main instrument piano and German studies . In 1950 he passed the state examination for teaching in the subjects of music and German. From 1951 he worked as a university assistant and later as a senior assistant at the musicological institute of the Martin Luther University in Halle (Saale) , in 1952 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Johann Mattheson . In 1958 the University of Halle-Wittenberg accepted his habilitation thesis on the Central German choral passion in the 18th century. At the end of 1961, Braun left the GDR with his wife and their children and became a private lecturer at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , connected with a research center. There he was appointed adjunct professor in 1967. In 1968 he moved to Saarbrücken University as a scientific adviser with the title of professor . In July 1972 he was appointed professor of musicology as successor to Walter Wiora . After the formal abolition of the chairs by the Saarland University Act in the later 1970s, Braun was given the official title of "Professor for Life" ( C-4 professorship ). He held this office until his retirement in autumn 1994.

Scientific activity

Werner Braun's main research areas were German and also British music history of the 17th and 18th centuries, including especially North and Central German Protestant church music , opera and singspiel , art song and music theory from that time. His important research work includes Britannia abundans (1977), a fundamental study of Anglo-German musical relationships at the time of William Shakespeare , Der Stilwandel der Musik um 1600 (1982), an analysis of the transition from " Renaissance music " to " Baroque music ", and Thöne and Melodeyen, Arias and Canzonets (2004), a comprehensive treatise on the German art song in the Baroque era. Werner Braun wrote (until 2007) 15 monographs, around 140 scientific essays and 38 articles for the new edition of the encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (1994–2007). He also published eight sheet music editions of works by German composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. From 1987 to 1993 he was the founder and head of the series Saarbrücker Studies on Musicology, New Series . A commemorative publication was dedicated to Werner Braun on his 65th and 75th birthday.

Braun was a member of the scientific advisory board of the critical complete edition of all works by Johann Rosenmüller .
