Werner Ebeling (General)

Werner Ebeling (born November 21, 1913 in Stade ; † August 25, 2008 in Sandkrug near Oldenburg ) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht and the Bundeswehr , most recently major general , and author (fiction and military non-fiction).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1934, Ebeling volunteered for one year in the 16th Infantry Regiment of the Wehrmacht. From 1936 he began to study pedagogy at the College for Teacher Training in Kiel. During this time he took part in several reserve exercises and became a lieutenant in the reserve . After being drafted, he began his active military service in the 220 Infantry Regiment of the 58th Infantry Division . In March 1941 Ebeling became chief of the 12th company. In August 1942 he was appointed as adjutant used and in January 1944 he was commander of the II. Battalion Grenadier Regiment 220. In September 1944, Ebeling commander of the Grenadier Regiment 154. On 8 May 1945 he was with the remnants of his regiment from the Hel Peninsula by Schleswig-Holstein disembarked and went into British captivity .

After being a prisoner of war, Ebeling worked as a self-employed businessman and from 1950 to 1956 as a teacher in Stade. One of his students was the future journalist Stefan Aust . In 1956 Ebeling joined the Bundeswehr as a colonel . Initially he was teaching group commander at the Hammelburg Infantry School and from 1962 to 1965 commander of the 16 Panzer Grenadier Brigade . From January 1968 and until his retirement in 1970 Ebeling was in the rank of major general, commander of the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division in Oldenburg .
