Werner Richter (cyclist)

Werner Richter (born February 27, 1918 in Seyde ; † May 23, 2004 in Chemnitz ) was a German racing cyclist .

Werner Richter began his sporting career as a skier . In Skiclub Frauenstein he worked in the long and in ski jumping (jumping). In 1935 he became the Saxon youth champion in jumping. During his apprenticeship, he cycled 40 kilometers to Dippoldiswalde every day and so came up with the idea of taking part in the Dresden First Step Race in 1935 , which he won. He then joined the Dresden cycling club Excelsior with the aim of qualifying for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , but did not succeed.

In 1938 Werner Richter won Rund um die Hainleite and took second place in the Berlin-Copenhagen race and became a member of the German national team. In 1939 he became German mountain champion and won the difficult alpine race ahead of Karl Kittsteiner. In 1940 he was drafted as a soldier, but could still race. In 1943 he made his first attempts as a stayer, where he won six races on the cycling track in Bamberg.

After the Second World War he was active again as a professional driver. In 1947 and 1948 he was second at Berlin – Cottbus – Berlin . At the IRA Green Belt , a predecessor of the Deutschland Tour , he won the first stage in 1949 and came fourth overall. In 1950 he finished third overall in the Bavarian Tour and, together with Otto Weckerling, became GDR professional champion in two-man team driving . In 1952 he started together with Rudolf Voigt on the Tour of Germany for the "Rapier" team, which was the only team to bring all drivers to the finish. Judge was 29th in the overall ranking. In March 1955 Richter had himself re-amateurized and then started for BSG Motor Diamant Karl-Marx-Stadt. In the 1950s, Richter was mainly active as a stayer , but also as a trainer.

In 2000 Richter was awarded the Chemmy for his life's work.
