history

The place was first mentioned in 1161 as Glochowe . Lochau and Wesenitz were on the Saxony-Merseburg border and belonged to the hall circle of the ore monastery of Magdeburg . They were under noble jurisdiction. In 1680 the Magdeburg bishopric came under Brandenburg-Prussian rule as the Duchy of Magdeburg . With the Peace of Tilsit , Lochau and Wesenitz were incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. They belonged to the canton of Dieskau . After Napoleon's defeat and the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Napoleon's allied opponents liberated the Saalkreis in early October 1813. During the political reorganization after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, both places were attached to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony in 1816 and assigned to the Saalkreis.

In 1938 Lochau merged with the neighboring village of Wesenitz. Since August 1, 2004, Lochau has been part of the Schkopau community and was assigned to the Merseburg-Querfurt district . The previous responsibility of the Kabelske-Tal administrative community in the Saalkreis was thus canceled and now lies with Schkopau. After the new regional reform, Lochau belongs to the Saalekreis .

Karl Witte (1800–1883) was called the “child prodigy of Lochau” . At the age of 13 he already received an honorary doctorate from the University of Giessen, at the age of 17 he completed his habilitation in law in Heidelberg, and taught for more than 50 years at the University of Halle. His family now had a plaque of honor put up in Halle for their ancestor, who also made a name for himself in Dante research and as a translator of Italian Renaissance literature.
