Wide White Space Gallery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wide White Space was the name of a Belgian gallery in Antwerp that, in the short period of its existence, became one of the leading avant-garde galleries in Europe and worked closely with well-known artists such as Joseph Beuys and Panamarenko . It existed from 1966 to 1976 and was founded and managed by Anny de Decker and Bernd Lohaus .

History, meaning and performances

The artist Bernd Lohaus , who came from Düsseldorf, and the art historian Anny de Decker founded the gallery Wide White Space in 1966 in Plaatsnijderstraat 1 in Antwerp in order to offer a space to the new artists, for whom there were no exhibition opportunities in the traditionally conservative museums at the time where they could show their works. For orientation of the visitors, the invitations bore the ironic note “Behind the Museum”. The gallery was very attractive to the new art scene and was one of the first to develop activities on an international scale. Wide White Space had close contacts with the ZERO group , was always looking for new avant-garde artists in rapid rotation and supported them by participating in the emerging art markets, for example at documenta 4 . It was significant that the artists here “relocated to conceive their exhibitions themselves as total works of art, including all related elements from the invitation card to the ritual of the vernissage”, whereby the gallery organized some unique events. On February 9, 1968, Joseph Beuys carried out his second performance Eurasienstab in the gallery Wide White Space , which he created together with the Danish artist and Fluxus composer Henning Christiansen based on the basic idea of the union of western and eastern cultures. The copper rod and the felt angles were adapted to the height of the gallery. Marcel Broodthaers ' cameraman , Paul de Fru, commissioned by Anny de Decker, made a film in the process, which was published on DVD in 2005 by the Joseph Beuys media archive with an accompanying book . For the gallery's stand at the Prospect 68 and Prospect 69 exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf , Beuys created several works, including the felt-covered concert grand piano Infiltration homogeneous for concert grand pianos (1968).
