Location of the parish |
Visby Sogn (German Wiesby ) is a Danish parish in the municipality of Tønder , Region Syddanmark . It is located a few kilometers northwest of the town of Tønder .
Visby Sogn belonged to Harde Tønder, Højer og Lø Herred in Tønder Amt until 1970 , and then to Bredebro Kommune in Sønderjyllands Amt until 2007 .
Municipal area
The area covers an area of almost 20 square kilometers. On January 1, 2020, 565 people lived here, 356 of them in the village of Visby itself, although the number has decreased significantly since the 19th century (1860: 815).
The church village is the largest place in the community. Other settlements are in the north Mollerup and in the south Øster Gammelby. All three formed independent rural communities in 1867-75, but were then combined into one that existed until 1970.
Neighboring communities are Emmerlev in the west , Brede in the north, Abild in the east and Daler in the south .
Attractions
Trøjborg is an impressive castle ruin. Already mentioned in the early 14th century as an episcopal estate, Trøjborg became a secular aristocratic property after the Reformation . In the middle of the 19th century the estate was given up. Since neither a buyer was found, nor was it possible to use it as a seminar building and extensive renovation work appeared necessary, the owner at the time had it demolished in 1851. The preserved remains and the double ring moat still show the former importance.
The church of Visby is essentially Romanesque, but its shape, which is quite atypical for the region, was given by the renovation in 1590. The high four-sided tower and the east side of the nave show elaborate volute gables in the Renaissance style .
traffic
The roads are only of local importance. The main village of Visby is at the intersection of the two main roads. The north-south road, on which Gammelby and Mollerup are also located, connects Bredebro with Højer Sogn and Møgeltønder . The east-west road connects Visby with Emmerlev in the west and the A 11 ( Green Coastal Road ) in the east.
East of Visby is the railway station of the original Marschbahn , the railway Bramming-Tønder , with direct connections to Tønder, Ribe and Esbjerg .
