action
The film begins with a voiceover by the seventeen-year-old protagonist Ida. She says she was often asked questions about her family and noticed that some people's stories go wrong before they really start. The rest of the film is told as a flashback: After her mother dies in a car accident, Ida moves in with her aunt Bodil and her three grown sons, whom she hardly knows. You immediately integrate Ida into the family. Ida soon realizes that the thoroughly loving family clan is conducting criminal business under the leadership of the caring and strict matriarch . Despite moral doubts, Ida fits into the family structures and accompanies her cousins in their machinations as credit collectors.
Ida is there when her cousin David shoots a debtor in a scuffle. Ida fled to her supervisor at the youth welfare office, but could not make up her mind to betray the family. Even when the police question her, she is silent. Bodil asks Ida to cover her sons: As a minor with no previous convictions, she could only expect a mild sentence. Ida has to decide whether she wants to distance herself from the family or to join them permanently.
After a leap of a few months, the family visits Ida in the youth prison. It becomes clear that David and his pregnant friend Anna, with whom Ida had befriended, will continue to live with Bodil. Soon afterwards, David shoots himself in front of his mother.
When Anna was in labor in the hospital, she kept repeating that she did not want the child and that she would like to put it up for adoption. In the last scene you can see Anna looking at her newborn son. In the voiceover, Ida repeats the first sentences of the film: Some of the stories go wrong before they have really started.

reception
Wendy Mitchell wrote for the Danish Film Institute that Kød & Blod is an atypical Mafia film that does without the usual clichés. The film also differs from other films of the genre through its female perspective and through a woman as the leader of the criminal clan.
Hollywood Reporter praised Sidse Babett Knudsen's reserved portrayal of a single mother who wants to protect her sons and at the same time sends them out as criminal henchmen. Your game makes the inner conflict between the gang leader and mother clear. The set of Helle Lygum Justesen is memorable, especially the inconspicuous suburban house of the family. The few action scenes are staged with brutal intensity. Jeanette Nordahl's direction is a bit uniform in places, but still subtly powerful. Variety also praised Knudsen's convincing performance, but noted that the overly cautious script did not give her enough opportunity to shine. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw highlighted Sandra Guldberg Kampps' low-key and disturbing portrayal of the main character. He thinks the film has what it takes to be a big hit.
