Born as the son of a pastor in the Calenberger Land during the so-called French era , Wilhelm Eichhorn completed a commercial apprenticeship in a materials store in Hanover. In the early years of the Kingdom of Hanover , he then worked as a dispatcher and representative for a Hildesheim company before - again in Hanover - in 1835 he founded his own company as a colonial and material goods store at Steintorstrasse 7 and Reitwallstrasse 4 .

As one of the pioneers of the branded article concept , Wilhelm Eichhorn guaranteed his customers coffee as a product of constant quality . At the same time, Eichhorn was one of the first to merge a product name with the name of the manufacturer. His trademark also followed this idea: a squirrel with a coffee cup between its paws.

After Wilhelm Eichhorn's death, his successors expanded the company into a large roasting plant, which was sold to the Machwitz company in 1966 .

From the company's history, the Eichhorn-Haus in Hanover can still be found today at the address Steintorstraße 9 with the rear building in which the coffee roastery was operated.
