Wilhelm Gotte
Wilhelm Julius Götte (born November 12, 1807 in Braunschweig , † December 11, 1839 in Leipzig ) was a German philologist , philosopher and journalist who belonged to Robert Schumann's circle of friends .
Life
Götte was the son of a brewer. After attending the Martineum in Braunschweig , he studied philosophy at the University of Leipzig from 1826 to 1828 , during which time he was a member of the Old Leipzig Burschenschaft , of which he was a board member and spokesman for the winter semester 1827/28.
There he met Robert Schumann in 1828 and soon became one of his closest friends. On July 13, 1828, Schumann noted in his diary: “Götte is a tremendous man and I love him like seldom ”. In August of the same year he characterized Götte with the words: “Götte is a true Vulcan from which nothing more than Hephaesthes and the like. Lava flows rise, which shatter u. devastate; but when the lava is burned out, it stands still and crystallizes and becomes a beautiful mirror of his soul u. to the solid mass on which we can step forward boldly. "
After his student days in Leipzig, he traveled to Erlangen , Würzburg , Tübingen and Heidelberg with members of the Leipzig fraternity .
In 1828 Götte continued his studies at the University of Göttingen , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate .
After living in Braunschweig and Berlin, where he sought in vain for a job, he was co-editor in 1837 at the Leipzig publisher Brockhaus appearing Leipziger Allgemeine Zeitung , the forerunner of the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . In the same year he renewed his acquaintance with Robert Schumann.
