Wilhelm Graf von Kanitz (born July 28, 1846 in Podangen ; † February 10, 1912 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 20th division in Hanover.

Life

origin

Wilhelm came from the noble family of those von Kanitz and was a younger brother of the well-known parliamentarian Hans Graf von Kanitz and fourth son of the General Landscape Director of East Prussia , a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and later of the Prussian Manor (1868–1877), Emil Carl Ferdinand Graf von Kanitz (1807–1877) and Charlotte von Sydow (1820–1868) from the Stolzenfelde house in Neumark.

Military career

Kanitz attended the Roßleben monastery school and began studying law at the University of Heidelberg , where he became a member of the Corps Saxoborussia .

On May 18, 1866, he joined the substitute squadron of the 2nd Brandenburg Uhlan Regiment No. 11 as a flag junior , switched to the mobile formation and took part in the war against Austria . In January 1867 he was transferred to the Jäger Battalion No. 1 and on August 10, 1867 promoted to second lieutenant. In 1870/71 he took part in the war against France , in which he was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Transferred to the 1st Badische Leib-Grenadierregiment No. 109 in 1872 , Kanitz was appointed Premier Lieutenant on March 11, 1873 , Adjutant of the 58th Infantry Brigade in 1874 and, from May 1876, for one year to serve with the General Staff . In 1877 he was transferred to the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot . There he was in 1880 captain and company commander and 1889 Major , 1891 commander of the Fusilier Battalion, 1895 lieutenant colonel on the staff and in 1897 Colonel . On January 27, 1898 Kanitz was appointed commander of the Queen Augusta Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 4 . In 1901 he was entrusted with the leadership of the 39th Infantry Brigade in Hanover and was appointed brigade commander on June 16, 1901, when he was promoted to major general . On January 27, 1905, he was promoted to lieutenant general and charged with commanding the 20th division. In 1906 he was on his request for disposition made.

In 1907 he took over the chairmanship of the administrative committee of the Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation for German invalids.
