William Charles Arcedeckne Vanneck , 5th Baron Huntingfield (born January 3, 1883 in Gatton , Australia , † November 20, 1969 in Hove , United Kingdom ) was a conservative British politician and governor of the Australian state of Victoria .

Life

After attending Wellington College in England , Vanneck joined the Army in 1906. In the following years he was stationed in British India . In 1914 it was classified as unusable due to an illness; he spent the years of the First World War with a reservist regiment in Aldershot . In 1921 he retired from the army with the rank of captain .

From 1923 Vanneck was a member of the House of Commons for the community of Eye . For the 1929 election, however, he did not run because of his poor health.

His appointment as Governor of Victoria in December 1933 was well received in Victoria as he was the first governor to be born in Australia. Vanneck arrived with his wife in Melbourne in May 1934 and took office. In 1938 he also held the post of Governor General for six months while Lord Growie was absent .

After the end of his tenure, he returned to England in 1939. In 1941 he was appointed governor of Southern Rhodesia , but he did not take office again due to health problems.

Vanneck died on November 20, 1969. He was married twice and had two daughters and two sons.
