Willy Krogmann

Willy Krogmann (born September 13, 1905 in Wismar ; † March 20, 1967 in Hamburg ) was a German Germanic Medievalist . He dealt u. a. with Frisian and Low German philology , Germanic linguistics, runology , as well as the so-called Germanic antiquity as a whole.

education and profession

From the summer semester of 1924, Krogmann, the son of a timber merchant, studied German, philosophy, medium and modern history in Rostock and Leipzig . In 1928 he received his doctorate in Rostock with the work Investigations into the origin of the Gretchen tragedy. He completed his habilitation in 1939 at the University of Königsberg "on assignment" against opposition there.

In 1933 he joined the NSDAP , and later the NS-Lecturer Association . From 1933 to 1936 he worked for the German Dictionary in Berlin, which published Grimm's German Dictionary . This was followed by collaboration on Trübner's German dictionary until 1939. He then moved to the University of Hamburg as a research assistant , where he a. a. Taught Frisian . From 1940 to 1945 he worked as a special leader of the Wehrmacht in occupied Holland , and since 1940 he has been a member of the Frisian Academy in Leeuwarden.

In 1947 he began working on the Helgoland dictionary , and in 1948 he took over the management of the Frisian Institute in Hamburg, the establishment of which was suggested by the Hamburg guild. From 1952 to 1960 he was given a teaching position at the University of Hamburg, from 1960 to 1967 he was lecturer for Frisian philology.
