Winterbach is a district of St. Wendel in Saarland and, after Bliesen, the second largest district of the district town.

history

Winterbach is located on the Rheinstrasse, a Roman road whose origins go back to the Celtic era. Therefore, a settlement as early as 500 BC. Can be assumed in the Hallstatt period. The only completely preserved relic of the Hallstatt period in the whole of Saarland was also found in Winterbach, a millstone . Some Celtic graves are located near the Worrach, a watercourse. In Roman times there were many villas in Winterbach , the foundations of which were often discovered during construction work in the 20th century. However, even then the expansion of houses and streets was too far advanced for a more extensive archaeological research into the prehistoric development.

Winterbach was first mentioned in a document in 1242. To mark this occasion, a 770th anniversary celebration was held on three days in August 2012.

Until 1814, Winterbach was assigned to the canton of Tholey in the Moselle department.

On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Winterbach was incorporated into the district town of Sankt Wendel.

present

Winterbach was "never a center of anything, neither ecclesiastical, where Winterbach was oriented entirely to Alsweiler until the building of his own church, nor politically or economically," it says on the village's website. Nevertheless, Winterbach is today a popular place to live, also due to its favorable geographical location between St. Wendel and the A1 motorway . At the same time, the barrier effect of the former military training area promotes a certain separation from the district town and independence.

Trivia

  • Detail of the “cheese eater” statue
As for many places “in the country”, there is also a - more or less ironic - local necromancy for the people of Winterbach : the term “cheese eater” is nowadays seen more as a compliment. A statue of a man with a wheel of cheese, which was erected on the north-eastern edge of the village in the last century, testifies to this.
