Werschweiler is a city ​​district and municipality of the city of St. Wendel in the district of the same name in Saarland . Until the end of 1973 Werschweiler was an independent municipality.

The place is located in the Ostertal and is characterized by its agricultural tradition. It has many old farmhouses.

history

Werschweiler was first mentioned under the name Werßweiler in 1108, when Archbishop Ruthard of Mainz confirmed several villages as the property of the Disibodenberg monastery . Until the 15th century, the place belonged territorially to the County of Veldenz , in 1444 it became part of the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken and in 1603 to the County of Nassau-Saarbrücken , which it remained until the end of the 18th century.

In the course of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Werschweiler was assigned to the district town of Sankt Wendel on January 1, 1974.

Attractions

• The classical Protestant church in Frohnhoferstraße was built between 1838 and 1842. The tower rises to the west above the clearly structured rectangular hall. Horizontal, reddish cornices structure the white side walls with their arched windows. There are two listed bells in the bell tower. The small bell with a f sharp ² strike (120 kg, Ø 58 cm) dates from 1415 by the foundry Otto von Speyer . The big bell with strike note a ¹ , cast by Franz Schilling from Apolda, is a purchased remaining bell from 1900, which was taken over by the Evangelical Church in Werlau near Sankt Goar in 1921 .
• The list of monuments also includes the Scholze-Haus in the street Zum Erwesrech, the residential part of which dates from the 18th century, whereas an inscription on the economic part contains the year 1842, as well as a fountain from the 19th century in the Frohnhoferstraße.
• In 1983 the artist FW Leismann designed the village fountain.
• Werschweiler bears the title nature park village and is located near the Tiefenbachtal nature reserve.
• The architect Rudolf Maria Birtel worked in 1972 in the Otto Stoll house in Werschweiler.

regional customs

In Werschweiler, the very old customs of the corn maize and the Whitsun quack are cultivated. During the maize singing, the confirmands (today of course also children of other denominations or faiths of the appropriate age) of the long-standing Protestant village carry a decorated birch tree through the village on May 1st and sing old folk tunes and songs with the younger girls. Eggs, butter and bacon as well as small donations are collected from the villagers. The end of the corn meal is the "egg baking". The parents of the confirmands organize a joint meal for the children in which the collected eggs are prepared with butter and bacon. Several weeks before May Day, the May girls practice the old folk songs together. The Pentecost quack is the counterpart of the boys at Pentecost. Here the confirmands (^) carry or drive a wooden frame braided with beech branches, which is decorated with flowers on Pentecost Sunday. Instead of singing, the younger boys blow the "taratsch", a horn made of willow bark. Here too, eggs, butter and bacon as well as small donations are collected. Here, too, “baking eggs” concludes. The preparations for the Whitsun quack also begin a few weeks before Whitsun. The beech branches as well as the “Tatratsche” have to be cut, the quack frame braided and the necessary flowers collected in the village. For most of the children in the village, these traditions are the high points of the year that they look forward to for months.

The L 131 runs through Werschweiler. The former station is now used as a stop for the Ostertalbahn ; the station building is now privately owned as a residential building. From 2005 to 2006, the Ottweiler – Schwarzerden railway could also be used with draisines .

Economy and Infrastructure

The place still has a rural character. In addition to retirement homes, Werschweiler also houses a boys' living group from the St. Wendel Hospital Foundation.
