Vladimir Dmitrievich Kuznetsov ( Russian Владимир Дмитриевич Кузнецов ; born April 30 . Jul / 12. May  1887 greg. In Miass , † 13. October 1963 in Tomsk ) was a Russian physicist , materials scientists and university teachers .

Life

Kuznetsov, the son of an entrepreneur , graduated from the boys' high school in Troitsk in 1906 with a silver medal. He then studied physics at the University of St. Petersburg . He completed his studies in 1910 with a first class diploma. He then taught at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute .

In 1911 Kuznetsov was invited to Tomsk . He became an assistant, teacher, private lecturer and finally associate professor at the chair of physics at the Tomsk Technological Institute (until 1928). He was also a professor at the Department of Physics in the Siberian Higher Courses for Women . After the February Revolution in 1917 and the October Revolution , he taught at Tomsk University . One of his most famous students was the metalworker Marija Bolshanina .

After the withdrawal of Admiral Kolchak's White Army in 1919 and occupation by the Red Army , Kuznetsov remained in Tomsk as the leading representative of the pre-revolutionary professors. In 1921 he became a professor at the chair for physics and head of the chair for geophysics . In 1922 he became a master doctorate in physics. In 1922 he represented the rector and in 1923 the dean . 1924–1926 and 1933–1936 he was himself dean of the physics and mathematics faculty .

In 1929 Kuznetsov became director of the Siberian Physical-Technical Institute he initiated (until 1933 and again 1937-1960).

In 1934 Kuznetsov received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences .

After several changes of chair at Tomsk University, Kuznetsov headed the chair for metal physics from 1939 until his death . During the German-Soviet war he took over the chairmanship of the scientific committee to support the front. After the war he continued his scientific work. In 1945 he became a member of the CPSU .

The focus of Kuznetsov's scientific work was on the properties of the solid . The focus was on surface energy , hardness , the strength of crystals and polycrystals , plasticity , the mechanisms of crystallization and recrystallization as well as friction and wear of metals and alloys . In particular, the physical principles of metalworking by machining were examined experimentally and theoretically.

Until the establishment of the Siberian Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) in 1957, Kuznetsov was the only member (corresponding member since 1946) of the AN-SSSR beyond the Urals . He became a full member of the AN-SSSR in 1958.

The Siberian Physico-Technical Institute and a street in Tomsk bear Kuznetsov's name.
