Vladimir Platonovich Sukatschow ( Russian Владимир Платонович Сукачёв * July 14 jul. / 26. July  1849 greg. In Irkutsk , † 2. January 1920 in Bakhchisaray ) was a Russian politician , art collector and patron .

Life

Sukachev's noble father Platon Petrowitsch Sukatschow (1801-1878) was a councilor (6th class ) in the central administration of Eastern Siberia . Sukachev's mother Agrafena Nikanorowna, born Trapesnikowa (1820-1850), came from an old, rich Siberian merchant family. Sukachev attended the Irkutsk grammar school with graduation in 1867 and then studied at the law faculty of the University of St. Petersburg . In 1869 he moved to the natural history department of the University of Kiev , where he graduated as a biologist in 1871 . During his studies he bought paintings for his art collection by Ilya Efimovich Repin , Chariton Platonowitsch Platonow , Konstantin Eegorowitsch Makowski , Wassili Wassiljewitsch Vereschtschagin , Ivan Konstantinowitsch Aivazovsky , Serhij Wassylkiwskyj , Alexander Nikolajewitschid in Irstellinovich Mordomatov , and Leonardovich . After the death of the head of the Trapesnikow family, Innokenti Nikanorowitsch Trapesnikow, Sukachev inherited a considerable fortune. In the early 1880s he returned to Irkutsk from Kiev with his wife Nadezhda Dolschenkowa (1856–1935) and their sons Boris and Plato. Daughter Anna and son Vladimir were born in Irkutsk. Abroad Sukachev ordered copies of paintings by Raphael , Murillo , Guido Renis , Correggio and others. On his estate in Irkutsk, Sukachev set up a picture gallery in a building (1882) that was open to all visitors.

In 1883 Sukachev was elected to the Irkutsk city duma . In 1885 he was elected member of the City Duma with voting rights and was elected head of the city of Irkutsk with re-election in 1889 and 1894. Under his leadership, the volunteer fire brigade was formed, the telephone network was connected , and the city was illuminated electrically . The water supply and sewerage were improved. The first pontoon bridge over the Angara replaced the cumbersome ferry and was opened in 1891 in the presence of the heir to the throne Nicholas II .

Sukachev donated for the construction of the city theater. In 1879 he built a poor house and a home for the children of offenders. He organized the Society for the Welfare of the Blind in Irkutsk and opened a school for the blind. He devoted himself to the school system and supported the teachers in their hard work. He supported the work of the East Siberian Department of the Russian Geographical Society (WSORGO) with significant funds . He financed the creation of a systematic catalog for the WSORGO museum. He gave 143 volumes of valuable scientific and artistic editions to the society. In 1883 he gave 17,000 rubles for the Mongolia expedition of the WSORGO member Grigori Nikolayevich Potanin . Sukachev paid for Nikolai Mikhailovich Jadrinzew to attend a conference in the USA . In 1890 Sukachev was elected chairman of the WSORGO.

In 1899 Sukachev was made an honorary citizen of Irkutsk by Ukas Nikolaus II . Sukachev received the Order of St. Stanislaus II Class and the Order of St. Anne II Class.

Sukachev spent the last years of his life in St. Petersburg . He issued a number of postcards with views of Siberian cities. He published a book on Irkutsk and the development of Eastern Siberia. He participated in the publication of the magazine Sibirskije Voprossy and the newspaper Vostochnoye Obosrenije . With others he organized the society to support Siberian students in St. Petersburg.

After the October Revolution, Sukachev evaded the Russian civil war to the Crimea and settled in Bakhchysaray. where he died and was buried.

In 1989 the Irkutsk Oblast Museum of Art received the name of its founder Sukachev as an addition.
