Location of Ahlum in Wolfenbüttel

Ahlum is a district of the district town Wolfenbüttel in the district of the same name Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony . The place still has a village structure.

geography

Ahlum is about two kilometers east of the eastern border of the Wolfenbüttel core city. The place is in a tree-poor, slightly hilly landscape. About one kilometer south of Ahlum, the Altenau flows into the Schöppenstedter Mulde , the soil of which is highly fertile due to its thick layer of loess . Further south you can find the Asse ridge within walking distance .

Neighboring villages are, starting from the west and clockwise, Wolfenbüttel, Atzum , Salzdahlum , Apelnstedt , Dettum and Wendessen .

history

Traces of settlement can be traced back to the Stone and Bronze Ages for Ahlum. Even then, the great fertility of the soils there was recognized. A place called Aluchi was mentioned as early as 826, but it is unclear whether it is today's Ahlum. 888 there was a place Odonhem , probably today's Ahlum. From 1178 the place names Adenheim , Adenem , Odenem and Alen are guaranteed for today's place. Only after the Reformation were the spellings Ahlum and Ahlen introduced.

For centuries, Ahlum was under the influence of spiritual institutions, starting with the Halberstadt diocese . Even today there is an important monastery in the village. The original name was Klosterhof. It was a ducal domain until 1918 , a domain of the state of Braunschweig until 1945 and is now part of the monastery and study fund .

In 1627, during the Thirty Years' War , Ahlum and some neighboring towns were devastated by the troops of the Danish King Christian IV .

On March 1, 1974, the previously independent community of Ahlum was incorporated into Wolfenbüttel.

From around 1970 to 1998 Peter Schwarz ( CDU ) was the local mayor. From 1998 to November 2011 Ralf Mühlenkamp (CDU) was the local mayor.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a golden sword and a golden crook crossed diagonally on a blue background, covered by a golden ear of wheat.

The colors blue and gold are reminiscent of Ahlum's membership of Braunschweig for over seven centuries. The predominant influence of spiritual institutions on the place is symbolized by the crook. The ear of wheat indicates the great importance of agriculture for the residents of Ahlum.
