Wolfgang La Baume (born February 8, 1885 in Wurzen ; † March 18, 1971 Ludwigshafen on Lake Constance ) was a German prehistorian .

Life

After leaving school, La Baume studied 1903-1907 Natural Sciences in Jena and Berlin , where he in 1908 with his work contribution to the knowledge of the fossil and subfossil bovids doctorate was and as an assistant at the Museum of Natural History worked. During his studies in 1903 he became a member of the Germania Jena fraternity . From 1911 he was a curator at the West Prussian Provincial Museum in Gdansk , where he as successor to Paul Kumm from 1923 as director board. In the same year La Baume founded the Danzig Society for German Prehistory . In 1924 he qualified as a professor for prehistory and early history at the Technical University of Danzig , where he was appointed associate professor in 1928 . From 1928 to 1933 he took over the chair for prehistory at the Albertus University in Königsberg . 1938 La Baume was appointed director of the State Office for history with the Prussia Museum in Königsberg appointed, where he served as Interstate steward for cultural-historical ground antiquities and nurses of the East Prussian heritage museums worked. After his expulsion in 1945, he initially worked at the Museum of Patriotic Antiquities in Gottorf Castle in Schleswig . From 1950 he headed the Department of Prehistory and Early History in the JG Herder Research Council in Marburg .

His son Peter La Baume (1916–1977) was also a prehistoric.

Services

In addition to his scientific work, La Baume also devoted himself to early history and systematically combined both disciplines in his work. La Baume organized numerous archaeological excavations on the lower Vistula , which were presented in publications important for the history of the region. His most important research projects included the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age in Pomerania , as well as his publications on the Pomeranian face urn culture . From 1924 to 1938, La Baume was the editor of the magazine Blätter für German Prehistory . From 1938 and again from 1950 he belonged to the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research , which made him an honorary member in 1956.
