World Open (chess)
The World Open is a major chess tournament that has been held annually since 1973 by the Continental Chess Association in the first week of July on the east coast of the United States .
732 players registered for the first event; In 1986 there were 1507 participants. The tournament is characterized by comparatively high prize money and the fact that the top players also have to pay entry fees and bear their own costs. Most recently, this was changed so that the corresponding amounts are deducted from the profit. As a rule, eight or nine tournament categories are formed - depending on the skill level. However, the admission modalities have recently changed several times. For example, if only players with an Elo rating of over 2400 points were allowed to participate in the open category in 2014 , this rule was lifted again in 2015.
Several other chess events take place alongside the World Open, such as blitz , junior and senior tournaments .
