Wulfen is a small town in the south of the island of Fehmarn and part of the city of Fehmarn, Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein .

Wulfen is located between the Burger Binnensee and the Baltic Sea . The village used to belong to the municipality of Landkirchen auf Fehmarn . The population is about 125. The distance to the center of the island of Fehmarn, the city of Burg, is four kilometers.

economy

Economically today, Wulfen is predominantly touristy thanks to holiday apartments, riding stables and camping sites. In addition, the Fehmarn golf course with 18 holes and a short-hole course with 9 holes were laid out around the recreation area from 1991 onwards, which the Golf Club Fehmarn e. V. houses.

The fishermen in the village of Wulfen have a fishing spot on the Burger Binnensee at a point in front of the dike , which is only operated as a sideline.

history

The former fishing village (formerly also called Wolfen ) is one of the "colonist villages" that were settled before 1230 as part of the eastern colonization.

Stone age graves

The Wulfener Berg (18 m) was originally an important prehistoric burial ground. A large stone grave stood on the salt marshes in front of Wulfen until 1876 . It was destroyed as part of the dike construction. In 2010 a stone-age long bed grave was rebuilt on Wulfener Berg.

geography

beaches

Wulfen has two beaches, one on the leading steep bank and one on the spit hook of the Wulfener Hals, where there is a large campsite.

Burger lake

The Burger Binnensee and the Baltic Sea are highly frequented areas for surfers and kiters. Every year a surf festival takes place here on Ascension Day, from which the Fehmarn Race starts (circumnavigation of the island). The record was held by Bernd Flessner from 2009 to 2017 with 2 hours and 48 minutes . On August 25, 2017, this record was exceeded by kite surfer Florian Gruber with a time of 1 hour 43 minutes.

Wulfen mountains

In the Wulfen Mountains , gravel was extracted for the construction of the Fehmarnsund Bridge until 1962 . The site was created in 1972 by the “Wulfener Berge e. V. ”has been recultivated into a recreation and nature area. Hiking and riding trails lead through the area. At the highest point there is a lookout point, from where the view extends from the Fehmarnsund Bridge to the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast.

At the highest point of the Wulfener Berg there used to be one of the numerous grain mills on the agricultural island, the Bargmöhl. This is also the name of the single homestead today.
