history

When the province of Xikang was dissolved in 1955, the government district of Ya'an (雅安 专区, from 1970: 雅安 地区) was reintegrated into the province of Sichuan. The district government was seated in the city of Ya'an (雅安 市). At the same time, the Luding district was detached from Garzê and added to the administrative district. This consisted of a city and eight districts. In 1956 Luding was "returned" to Garzê and there were seven circles left. In 1959, the city of Ya'an was converted into Ya'an County (雅安 县). In 1983, Ya'an County was dissolved and Ya'an County was re-established. Finally, on June 14, 2000, Ya'an Governorate was converted into Ya'an Prefecture, while Ya'an County was converted into Yucheng District.
