Yohannes Woldegiorgis (born December 27, 1921 in Alitena, Ethiopia , † September 19, 2002 ) was a bishop and Vicar Apostolic of Meki .

Life

The priesthood candidate Yohannes Woldegiorgis was one of the first students in 1942 to attend the new seminary of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa . His training as a priest was partially interrupted by the Second World War. After studying in Addis Ababa for four years, he was sent to the Pontifical Ethiopian College in Rome .

Rome and England

He completed his studies in philosophy and theology in Rome and was preparing for a position in the Meki mission station ( Ethiopia ). At the same time he learned the Italian language . He was ordained a diocesan priest on October 31, 1954 in the Apostolic Vicariate Adigrat . After his ordination he was trained as a health and nurse . He stayed in England for two years and also learned the English language .

Teacher and pastor

After his return to the Diocese of Adigrat, Woldegrigoris worked at the episcopal seminary from 1957 to 1969, where he was appointed vice chancellor and professor . This was followed by twelve years of parish activity in his hometown, in addition to pastoral work, Pastor Woldegiorgis was committed to the drinking water supply , water treatment and road construction .

On September 8, 1981, Pastor Woldegrigoris, appointed Prefect , took over the Apostolic Prefecture of Meki. With his appointment as titular bishop of Forma on December 21, 1991, he was also called to the position of Vicar Apostolic, the former Prefecture of Meki, which had meanwhile been elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate. The prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Jozef Tomko and the co-consecrators Alexius Obabu Makozi (Bishop of Port Harcourt , Nigeria ) and Egidio Caporello (Bishop of Mantua , Italy ) initiated him on May 3, 1992 on the bishop. Immediately after taking office, he began extensive social and pastoral projects. In 1984 he opened a seminary in Meki, promoted religious orders and in 1985 supported the establishment of the episcopal women's order “Daughters of the Immaculate Virgin Mary”. New parishes were established, catechesis training centers were set up and health centers were built. As a bishop, he vehemently campaigned against the oppression of women and started an initiative against female circumcision . In 1986 he brought the Salesians of Don Bosco to Zway for missionary work , who built an elementary school and an oratory there.

Bishop Woldegrigoris was Mitkonsekrator of Leonardus Dobbelaar CM titular bishop of Luperciana (Vicar Apostolic of Nekemte , Ethiopia), Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel CM titular bishop of Bita (Vicar Apostolic of Addis Ababa) and Tesfasellassie Medhin Bishop of Adigrat .

He was in office until his death on September 19, 2002, and was succeeded by Bishop Abraham Desta .
