Yongding ( Chinese  永定区 , Pinyin Yǒngdìng Qū ) is a district of the prefecture -level city Longyan in the southwest of the Chinese province of Fujian on the border with Guangdong province . He administers an area of ​​2,223 square kilometers with a population of approximately 508,200 people. Yongding is known as the settlement area of ​​the Hakka , whose fortress houses called Tulou are unique.

Yongding is located in the southwest of Fujian and administers an area with a north-south extension of 80 kilometers and a west-east extension of 68 kilometers. It is bordered by Nanjing to the east , Pinghe to the southeast, Dabu and Meixian to the southwest, Shanghang to the northwest, and Xinluo to the northeast.

Yongding has a subtropical climate with long summers and short winters. The annual average temperature is 20.1 ° C and the annual precipitation averages 1607 millimeters, with a dry and a rainy season per year. There are an average of 305 frost-free days and 1743 hours of sunshine per year.

The population at the end of 2015 was estimated at 508,200 people in 153,400 households. The 2000 population census showed a total population of 411,587 people in 110,149 households, of which 213,180 men and 198,407 women.

Yongding is the center of the Hakka ethnic group , whose language is spoken throughout Yongding and the surrounding area. In addition, members of 23 national minorities mainly from She , Tujia , Miao and Zhuang live in Yongding .

Administrative division

Yongding was promoted from the county to a municipality in 2015 . At the community level, Yongding today consists of a street district , twelve large communities and eleven communities . These are:

Culture

Yongding is famous for its tulou, of which more than 20,000 are spread over the area of ​​the district and which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The walls of the tulou are made of a mixture of earth, lime, boiled sticky rice and brown sugar with strips of wood, grass and bamboo as a frame. They were built to withstand strong winds, earthquakes and enemies.

The mountain village with its special houses is unique in the world. The building complex in Yongding is characterized by its long history and huge dimensions. It consists of numerous round and square buildings, each with around 360 to 400 rooms.

At first only round towers ( yuanlou ) were built. The square towers ( fanglou ) were added later. They were built from rammed earth and had up to five floors. Inside, the buildings consisted of a concentric ring of lower buildings and an inner courtyard.
