You'll Be in My Heart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You'll Be in My Heart is a song by Phil Collins from the Disney film Tarzan (1999). The song appeared on the film's soundtrack as well as on other Disney compilations. A version of the single interpreted by Glenn Close was also included on the soundtrack.

A demo with Collins singing on the piano was released as a bonus feature on Tarzan's 2 DVD Special Edition.

Kevin Godley directed the  music video for the song .

Production and context

Although Collins ultimately sang the song, Disney had originally only hired him as a songwriter. With regard to his past as a drummer for the rock band  Genesis  , Collins seemed suitable for the Disney makers, since he forced a "powerful jungle beat to accompany Tarzan's adventures". Collins wrote this ballad as one of five original songs for the film.

The song, originally planned to be titled “Lullaby,” is used in the scene in which Tarzan's adoptive gorilla mother Kala Tarzan tries to calm down as a crying baby. She persuades him that she will protect it and keep it warm. She says that everything will be fine and "you will be in my hearts, always" (English for "you will always be in my heart, always"). The song is about "love is a bond that cannot be severed".

In the film, the song ends with the first verse. The full version of the song on the soundtrack album states that others cannot understand how a mother and her child can love each other when they are so different.

When fate calls, Tarzan is told that he must be strong even when his parents are not there. The song is one of only two songs in Tarzan, some of which are interpreted by a film character (the other is "Trashing 'the Camp"). The rest are sung by Collins himself. The entire song is eventually played during the credits.

In the stage version from 2006, the song is performed by Kala and the ensemble. A recapitulation is sung by Kala and Tarzan when the latter decides to return to the human world. This was because the omniscience of Collins' songs did not translate too well, so the song along with Two Worlds, "perform similar thematic and character introductions on stage".

Critical reception and awards

Manila Standard said Collins "grow poetically" with the song. The Disney Song Encyclopedia called it a "brisk ballad" and a "tender song". American Musical Theater: A Chronicle said Merle Dandridge, who sang the song in the Broadway version as Tarzan's adoptive mother Kala, had "the best song." American Literature on Stage and Screen: 525 Works and Their Adaptations  stated that the song had a "contemporary sound, with its impulses fitting wonderfully into the pulsating sound of the jungle". Billboard said the song went "in the same vein" as Collins' song "Can't Stop Loving You". Musical Experience in Our Lives: Things We Learn and Meanings We Make told a personal story of how the song had a special meaning for the mother-daughter relationship. Similar stories were also reported by two other sources.

Soon after the song was released, it was already being traded as an Oscar contender. The song eventually won the  Golden Globe Award for  Best Original Song and the  Academy Award  for  Best Original Song . Collins performed the song live at the Oscar ceremony. The song also received a Grammy Award nomination  , but fell short of  Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" from  Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me .

Charts

The song became very popular and played consistently on the radio. “You'll Be in My Heart” was number one on the Adult Contemporary Charts for 19 consecutive weeks  (“the longest time ever”) and peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 . The song was Collins 'first Top 40 hit on the  Billboard Hot 100 since "Everyday" in 1994. On the  UK Singles Chart , the song made 17th place, continuing Collins' success since "Everyday" did not ebb.
